Pan-genome analysis and molecular docking unveil the biocontrol potential of Bacillus velezensis VB7 against Phytophthora infestans

Mahendra Kadiri et al.

Summary: This study explored the anti-oomycete potential of Bacillus velezensis VB7 against Phytophthora infestans through pan-genome analysis and molecular docking. The confrontational assay confirmed the biocontrol potential of VB7 against P. infestans. Molecular docking revealed that penicillamine disulfide had the highest binding energy with eight effector proteins of P. infestans. Scanning electron microscopic observations showed structural changes in hypha and sporangia of P. infestans during interaction with VB7. Pan-genome analysis of 54 strains of B. velezensis confirmed the presence of a core genome with 2226 genes and an open pan-genome. This study confirmed the anti-oomycete potential of B. velezensis VB7 against P. infestans and provided insights into its genetic potential.

Identification of QTNs, QEIs interactions and genes for isoflavones in soybean seeds

Zhenhong Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, 97 genetic loci related to isoflavone traits were identified in soybean using 179 local soybean germplasms mainly from China. Among them, Glyma.09G037300 and Glyma.18G111200 were closely associated with multiple traits of soybean isoflavones. Higher expression of Glyma.09G037300 and Glyma.18G111200 was observed in soybean populations with high isoflavone content. Transient overexpression of Glyma.18G111200 significantly increased the content of total isoflavones in hairy roots.

Biocontrol of plant diseases by Bacillus spp

Hassan Etesami et al.

Summary: Biotic stresses pose a significant threat to global crop production and food security, especially with the rapid changes in climate. Plant diseases, caused by pathogenic infections, are responsible for 20-40% of crop loss worldwide. The use of biological control, such as plant-associated bacteria or compounds, is considered a promising alternative to chemical pesticides.

Bacillus velezensis SX13 promoted cucumber growth and production by accelerating the absorption of nutrients and increasing plant photosynthetic metabolism

Junzheng Wang et al.

Summary: The colonization of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) in the rhizosphere plays a crucial role in promoting plant growth and health. This study aimed to identify dominant PGPR strains and analyze their growth-promoting mechanisms, to drive the development and utilization of related agricultural products. Results showed that inoculation of certain bacterial strains improved root structures, photosynthesis, growth rate, and biomass accumulation in cucumber plants. In particular, plants inoculated with Bacillus velezensis SX13 exhibited the highest seedling growth rate. Further analysis revealed that B. velezensis SX13 enhanced nutrient absorption, photosynthetic metabolism, and enzyme activities related to carbon and nitrogen metabolism in the plants. The increased photosynthetic metabolism led to improved biomass and element accumulation in the roots and shoots, ultimately resulting in enhanced fruit quality and yield. However, a dose effect was observed for B. velezensis SX13 in this study.

Juggling with reactive oxygen species and antioxidant defense system - A coping mechanism under salt stress

Divya Singh

Summary: Even under optimal conditions, many metabolic processes produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) that damage biomolecules and lead to cell death. Plants have enzymatic and non-enzymatic mechanisms to scavenge ROS. While oxidative stress is lethal to cells, it can also be involved in cellular signaling and induce gene expression and protein production related to salt stress defense.

Combined Transcriptomic and Metabolomic Analysis Reveals the Role of Phenylpropanoid Biosynthesis Pathway in the Salt Tolerance Process of Sophora alopecuroides

Youcheng Zhu et al.

Summary: Salt stress induces significant changes in gene expression and metabolites in Sophora alopecuroides, particularly in the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway. The synthesis of lignin and flavonoids, which are correlated with differentially expressed genes and differential metabolites, may play a role in removing ROS in root tissue and reducing damage caused by salt stress. This study provides new insights and genetic resources for understanding plant responses to salt stress and enhancing salt tolerance in plants.

Bacillus subtilis HSY21 can reduce soybean root rot and inhibit the expression of genes related to the pathogenicity of Fusarium oxysporum

Songyang Han et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that B. subtilis HSY21 isolated from soybean rhizosphere soil effectively controlled Fusarium oxysporum, a major pathogen causing soybean root rot, by inhibiting its growth and expression of pathogenic genes. This strain showed a high inhibition rate against F. oxysporum and could be a promising candidate for the prevention and control of soybean root rot.

Effects of Spore Density and Interaction With Heterodera glycines on Soybean Root Rot Caused by Fusarium solani and F. tricinctum

Hui Yan et al.

Summary: This study found that increasing spore density of Fusarium solani and F. tricinctum can increase the severity of Fusarium root rot in soybeans, while the presence of soybean cyst nematode (SCN) exacerbates the disease. Additionally, coinfestation of soil with both Fusarium spp. and SCN significantly increased root rot severity, highlighting the importance of egg density in the soil as a factor in the interaction.

Role of Bacillus tequilensis EA-CB0015 cells and lipopeptides in the biological control of black Sigatoka disease

Tatiana Z. Cuellar-Gaviria et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of Bacillus tequilensis EA-CB0015-based product components in protecting banana plants against P. fijiensis infection. Results showed that lipopetides significantly reduced disease severity and bacterial cells colonized banana plant leaf surfaces within 48 hours of inoculation with P. fijiensis, with an increased production of surfactins detected. The biological control strategies of the MBCA product against P. fijiensis involve direct interaction via antibiosis and indirect interaction via competition for nutrients and space.
