The fate of sulfonamide resistance genes and anthropogenic pollution marker intI1 after discharge of wastewater into a pristine river stream

Sarah Haenelt et al.

Summary: Currently, there are few regulations on the discharge of antibiotics from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), resulting in surface waters becoming a potential reservoir for antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). In this study, the abundance of indicator genes and ARGs were monitored in a river system from its pristine source to WWTP-impacted water. The results showed that the WWTP effluent is the main source of sulfonamides and indicator genes, but downstream water quality improved with lower sulfonamide concentrations and decreasing abundances of sul1 and sul2.

High-Throughput Screening of Antimicrobial Resistance Genes and Their Association With Class 1 Integrons in Urban Rivers in Japan

Ikuro Kasuga et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious public health concern. This study used high-throughput quantitative polymerase chain reaction (HT-qPCR) to characterize the pollution profiles of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile gene elements (MGEs) in urban rivers in Tokyo and its surrounding area. The abundance of class 1 integron-integrase gene (intI1) and the array of class 1 integron gene cassettes were also determined. The results showed that effluent discharge from wastewater treatment plants increased the abundance of ARGs and MGEs, and intI1 could be used as a proxy for monitoring these genes in urban rivers.

IncP-type plasmids carrying genes for antibiotic resistance or for aromatic compound degradation are prevalent in sequenced Aromatoleum and Thauera strains

Hao-Yu Lo et al.

Summary: Self-transferable plasmids of the incompatibility group P-1 (IncP-1) play an important role in carrying antibiotic resistance genes and other adaptive functions. This study reveals the presence of an IncP-1 plasmid in Thauera aromatica K172(T), a facultative denitrifying microorganism capable of degrading aromatic compounds. Further investigation identifies nine IncP-type plasmids in closely related genera Aromatoleum and Thauera, with six of them forming a novel subgroup designated theta. These results provide new insights into the in situ host profile of IncP-1 plasmids and their significance in genetic adaptation.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance is a global health emergency caused by the unrestrained use of pharmaceutical and personal care products. The presence of various organic compounds in the environment, including antibiotics and antimicrobial agents, poses serious health risks to humans. Research needs to focus on discussing the sources of antibiotic resistance and the ecotoxicity risks in the environment.

Enhancing diversity analysis by repeatedly rarefying next generation sequencing data describing microbial communities

Ellen S. Cameron et al.

Summary: Amplicon sequencing revolutionizes the study of environmental DNA samples, providing a rapid and sensitive technique for microbial community analysis. Rarefaction, while statistically controversial, remains prevalent in practice for normalizing library sizes for diversity analysis. Repeated rarefying proposed as a tool to proportionately represent all observed sequences and characterize random variation in diversity analysis.

Environmental Biofilms as Reservoirs for Antimicrobial Resistance

Gabriela Flores-Vargas et al.

Summary: Characterizing microbial communities' response to a variety of antibiotic concentrations is crucial in understanding antibiotic resistance. While high concentrations of antibiotics have been studied in reservoirs like hospitals and farm feedlots, low concentrations in other environments remain less described, with gaps in knowledge regarding the dissemination of antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes in natural microbial communities. This review aims to focus on low antibiotic-concentration environmental reservoirs and key dissemination mechanisms to identify knowledge gaps in the environmental resistome.

Contrasting Effects of Environmental Concentrations of Sulfonamides on Microbial Heterotrophic Activities in Freshwater Sediments

Stephane Pesce et al.

Summary: This study found that the concentration of sulfonamide antibiotics in contaminated river sediments can affect the functional potential of sediment microbial communities, with high concentrations of SMX stimulating beta-glucosidase activity and SMZ only causing transient effects. The results imply that microbial communities in sediments may potentially biodegrade sulfonamide antibiotics, impacting ecosystem functioning.

Investigating the effects of municipal and hospital wastewaters on horizontal gene transfer

Marion Hutinel et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that chemicals present in municipal wastewater did not induce horizontal gene transfer (HGT), while exposure to hospital wastewater led to an increase in the number of recipients acquiring sulfonamide resistance. Although concentrations were generally higher in hospital wastewater, none of the measured substances could individually explain its effects; the majority of captured mobile genetic elements were Inch plasmids.

Summary: The presence of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the microbiome poses a significant global public health concern. Different habitats are at risk due to excessive antibiotic use and evolutionary changes in the resistome. China leads in the number of papers related to ARGs compared to other countries, with varied distributions of ARG subtypes across different environments.

Successional dynamics and alternative stable states in a saline activated sludge microbial community over 9 years

Yulin Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the microbial community in the activated sludge (AS) system remained stable around an average for 3 years, but was abruptly pushed into an alternative stable state by a simple transient disturbance like bleaching. Although the taxonomic composition changed rapidly, the metabolic profile and system performance of the community remained remarkably stable. Fine-scale analysis revealed dominant cohorts during different periods, with successional dynamics on seasonal and longer time scales due to temperature fluctuations and changes in mean residence time in the reactor.
