An updated classification of cyanobacterial orders and families based on phylogenomic and polyphasic analysis

Otakar Strunecky et al.

Summary: Cyanobacterial taxonomy is undergoing rapid changes due to advancements in 16S rRNA gene sequencing and new classification workflows. A study has reconstructed a robust phylogenomic tree using genomic sequences and established a polyphasic classification system for Cyanobacteria. This system incorporates both phylogenomic and phenotypic data to provide useful information for professionals in the field. However, the study also highlights the need for integrating genomic data to conclusively classify a large number of cyanobacterial genera in the future.

Characterization of the Halochromic Gloeocapsin Pigment, a Cyanobacterial Biosignature for Paleobiology and Astrobiology

Yannick J. Lara et al.

Summary: This study identified a gloeocapsin-producing cyanobacteria strain and compared the pigment extracted from the culture with a natural sample. The analysis of the pigment extract provided the molecular formula of gloeocapsin, suggesting it was either inherited from a common ancestor or acquired through lateral gene transfer. This work represents an important step towards understanding the structure and biosynthesis of this enigmatic pigment, and it offers a new biosignature for ancient cyanobacteria.

Detecting pigments from gypsum endoliths using Raman spectroscopy: From field prospection to laboratory studies

Katerina Nemeckova et al.

Summary: Microbial colonisations of gypsum from different sites from Southern Sicily and Eastern Poland were investigated using laboratory-based Raman microspectrometers and portable Raman spectrometric devices. Common microbial pigments were detected in majority of the samples and Raman microspectrometric investigations of colonisations allow to gather detailed information about pigment distribution in micrometric zones of gypsum samples. Portable instrumentation permits also detection of carotenoids and discussed the shifts of positions of Raman features of carotenoids between gypsum samples.

Rock structure drives the taxonomic and functional diversity of endolithic microbial communities in extreme environments

Emine Ertekin et al.

Summary: Endolithic microbial communities in gypsum rocks in the Atacama Desert exhibit higher taxonomic and functional diversity in fragmented substrate architectures, despite lower water availability. This is linked to community connectedness and niche differentiation, with populations adapting to unique micro-habitats through modulation of carbon and energy acquisition strategies. The microbial populations also encode potential pathways for anoxygenic phototrophy and atmospheric hydrogen oxidation as supplemental energy sources.

Raman spectroscopic search for scytonemin and gloeocapsin in endolithic colonizations in large gypsum crystals

Katerina Nemeckova et al.

Summary: Rock-dwelling microorganisms synthesize specialized UV-protective pigments to cope with intense UV-radiation. Raman microspectrometry was used to analyze noncarotenoid UV-protective pigments in dark-pigmented endolithic colonization from gypsum outcrops in Sicily, Poland, and Israel. Two specific pigments, scytonemin and gloeocapsin, were identified as biomarkers for certain taxa of cyanobacteria. The study demonstrates the potential of Raman spectroscopy in providing fast and noninvasive methods for characterizing endolithic consortia in their natural habitats.

Revealing the Characteristics of the Antarctic Snow Alga Chlorominima collina gen. et sp. nov. Through Taxonomy, Physiology, and Transcriptomics

Francisca E. Galvez et al.

Summary: The study describes a new Antarctic genus, Chlorominima, using a polyphasic approach to identify snow algae with typical psychrophilic characteristics. Molecular analysis confirms that the isolated alga forms an independent lineage closely related to other Antarctic and Arctic strains. Physiological experiments reveal cold-responsive and cryoprotective genes in the snow algae, indicating their cold acclimatization strategies.
