Diagnostic test accuracy of an automated device for the MALDI target preparation for microbial identification

Abdessalam Cherkaoui et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the Copan Colibri (TM) in comparison to manual preparation of MALDI targets. The results showed that the Colibri (TM) had better performance and higher intra-strain repeatability compared to the manual method.

Diagnosis and management of infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria: guideline endorsed by the Italian Society of Infection and Tropical Diseases (SIMIT), the Italian Society of Anti-Infective Therapy (SITA), the Italian Group for Antimicrobial Stewardship (GISA), the Italian Association of Clinical Microbiologists (AMCLI) and the Italian Society of Microbiology (SIM)

Giusy Tiseo et al.

Summary: The management of infections caused by multidrug-resistant organisms is challenging and requires a multidisciplinary approach. This paper provides recommendations for the diagnosis and optimal management of these infections, with a focus on targeted antibiotic therapy. However, the available evidence is limited, and some recommendations are based on low certainty. These recommendations should be regularly updated.

Giusy Tiseo et al.

Summary: Managing infections caused by multidrug-resistant organisms requires a multidisciplinary approach, with a focus on targeted antibiotic therapy. Recommendations were developed by experts nominated by Italian societies, with classifications based on the certainty of evidence, although some recommendations have low certainty due to limited clinical trial data.

Cefiderocol Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Considerations: the Achilles' Heel of the Trojan Horse?

Patricia J. Simner et al.

Summary: Cefiderocol is a novel siderophore-conjugated cephalosporin that shows activity against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli. It utilizes a siderophore component to bind iron and enter bacterial cells, leading to cell death. Further clinical studies are needed to determine its effectiveness against other organisms.

Benefits Derived from Full Laboratory Automation in Microbiology: a Tale of Four Laboratories

Karissa Culbreath et al.

Summary: This study is the first large, multicenter study in North America to report on the benefits derived from laboratory automation measured in full-time equivalents (FTE), FTE reallocation, productivity, cost per specimen, and cost avoidance. The results show that regardless of the size of the facility, improved efficiencies can be realized after implementation of full laboratory automation.

Performance of Fully Automated Antimicrobial Disk Diffusion Susceptibility Testing Using Copan WASP Colibri Coupled to the Radian In-Line Carousel and Expert System

Abdessalam Cherkaoui et al.

Summary: The study assessed the agreement at the categorical level between the Vitek 2 system and the Colibri coupled to the Radian under real laboratory conditions, with high overall categorical agreements. However, Vitek 2 had significant errors in P. aeruginosa testing. The Colibri coupled to the Radian provides an automated solution for antimicrobial disk diffusion susceptibility testing with accuracy equal to or better than the Vitek 2 system.
