Recent Advances in Antivirals for Japanese Encephalitis Virus

Yongzhe Zhu et al.

Summary: Culex mosquitoes are the primary vectors of the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), which has been a threat to human health since its discovery in 1935. Despite the use of JEV vaccines, the transmission chain of JEV remains unchanged, and the vector cannot be eliminated. Therefore, finding specific drugs for JE treatment is crucial. This review provides an overview of antivirals targeting JEV elements and host factors, as well as drugs that regulate innate immunity, inflammation, apoptosis, or necrosis to effectively treat JE.

Structural and functional analysis of Japanese encephalitis virus drug targets in focus on immune evasion mechanisms

Faiz Abdulaziz Alfaiz

Summary: Japanese encephalitis is a well-known arthropod-borne pathogen causing brain infections with a high mortality rate. It invades the central nervous system through nerve cells, weakening the body's natural defenses. Despite the lack of effective treatment, there are vaccine candidates available.

Molecular pathogenesis of Japanese encephalitis and possible therapeutic strategies

Sanjay Kumar et al.

Summary: This article reviews the strategies used by Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) to infect host cells and the cytopathic effects caused by JEV infection. The role of JEV structural proteins and non-structural proteins in the viral life cycle and their potential relevance for developing therapeutic drugs are highlighted.

Molecular Cloning of Alternative Splicing Variants of the Porcine PML Gene and Its Expression Patterns During Japanese Encephalitis Virus Infection

Jingjing Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, seven mature transcripts of porcine PML were cloned, showing significant upregulation of these isoforms during JEV infection. The late stage of infection also saw an upregulation of PML isoforms, along with an increase in the number of PML-NBs, suggesting a crucial role of porcine PML isoforms in JEV infection.

PML-II regulates ERK and AKT signal activation and IFNα-induced cell death

Xueqiong Meng et al.

Summary: Depletion of PML-II in HeLa cells reduced cell death induced by IFN alpha, decreased expression of pro-apoptotic ISG proteins, and suppressed expression of PUMA and TRAIL. Lack of PML-II also enhanced pro-survival signaling activation, leading to increased resistance to IFN alpha-induced apoptosis.
