Antibiotic Changes Host Susceptibility to Eimeria falciformis Infection Associated with Alteration of Gut Microbiota

Yujiao Gong et al.

Summary: The study found that antibiotic treatment has a suppressive effect on E. falciformis infection, with different antibiotic combinations showing varying impacts on the infection. Additionally, antibiotic treatment also alters the composition and diversity of gut microbiota, which is associated with host susceptibility to infection.

The intestinal parasite Cryptosporidium is controlled by an enterocyte intrinsic inflammasome that depends on NLRP6

Adam Sateriale et al.

Summary: Cryptosporidium infection causes a significant disease burden in children, with the inflammasome playing a critical role in initiating the early response. Mice lacking core inflammasome components show increased parasite burden, while deletion of caspase-1 solely in enterocytes phenocopies whole-body knockout. Activation of the inflammasome leads to release of IL-18, necessary for controlling parasite infection.

Relationship between Eimeria tenella associated-early clinical signs and molecular changes in the intestinal barrier function

Hung Hoang Son Pham et al.

Summary: This study investigated the temporal relationship between epithelial barrier conditions and clinical signs in chickens infected with Eimeria tenella. Clinical signs such as diarrhea and bloody feces were observed concurrently from 3 to 8 dpi. The study also found that the disruption of the intestinal barrier in avian coccidiosis was associated with changes in the expression levels of claudins and E-cadherin at the intestine.

The Absence of Gut Microbiota Alters the Development of the Apicomplexan Parasite Eimeria tenella

Pauline Gaboriaud et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of intestinal microbiota on Eimeria tenella infection using germ-free broilers as a model. Results showed that germ-free chickens had significantly lower parasite load in their ceca compared to conventional chickens. Lack of intestinal microbiota led to a lengthening of the parasite's asexual phase and a delay in specific gene expressions, ultimately resulting in lower parasite load in germ-free chickens.

NLRP6 in host defense and intestinal inflammation

K. Venuprasad et al.

Summary: NLRP6 is a protein that recognizes pathogen-derived factors, playing a crucial role in maintaining epithelial integrity and defending against microbial infections. It forms an inflammasome complex with other proteins to cleave pro-inflammatory cytokines into their active forms. Recent advances have shed light on the activation mechanisms of the NLRP6 inflammasome.
