Drought has inconsistent effects on seed trait composition despite their strong association with ecosystem drought sensitivity

Wentao Luo et al.

Summary: Seeds play a crucial role in the genetic diversity of grassland communities and their traits can affect ecosystem resistance to drought. This study investigated the effects of multi-year drought on seed traits and functional diversity in arid and semi-arid grasslands in northern China. The results showed that drought had limited effects on seed trait composition, but it led to increased seed functional diversity in some sites and years. Additionally, a negative relationship was observed between drought-induced reductions in above-ground net primary productivity and seed-coat thickness, suggesting that dominant species with thick seeds may enhance ecosystem resistance to drought. Overall, monitoring seed traits can provide valuable insights into ecosystem resistance to future droughts.

Antecedent climatic conditions spanning several years influence multiple land-surface phenology events in semi-arid environments

David J. A. Wood et al.

Summary: This study utilizes random forest models to predict phenological responses in three dominant land cover types in the U.S. Northwestern Great Plains (NWP) by assessing the combination of climate, location, edaphic, vegetation composition, and disturbance variables. The study finds that antecedent conditions, from seasons to years prior, strongly influence phenological measures and mediate the responses of communities. Additionally, contextual variables such as soil characteristics and vegetation composition are associated with productivity measures.

Expansion and Intensification of the North American Monsoon During the Pliocene

Tripti Bhattacharya et al.

Summary: This study presents the first direct evidence for an intensified mid-Pliocene monsoon in Southwestern North America (SWNA) using leaf wax hydrogen isotopes. The research shows that monsoon intensification is linked to amplified warming on the southern California margin relative to the tropical Pacific. This has implications for understanding present-day monsoon variations and predicts the possibility of Pliocene-like rainfall co-existing with intensifying megadrought in SWNA.

Five Decades of Observed Daily Precipitation Reveal Longer and More Variable Drought Events Across Much of the Western United States

Fangyue Zhang et al.

Summary: Multiple lines of evidence suggest that climate change is leading to increased precipitation variability and more frequent extreme events. This study analyzed daily meteorological observations from 1976 to 2019 at 337 long-term weather stations in the western US and found widespread warming with reduced annual precipitation and increasing interannual variability. The findings indicate an intensification of precipitation variability, particularly in the form of more common extreme-duration droughts, which may have detrimental consequences for essential ecosystem services.

Summary: Understanding complex and unpredictable ways ecosystems are changing and predicting future ecosystem states require coordinated, long-term research efforts. This paper reports on a US National Science Foundation funded Long Term Ecological Research network synthesis on anticipated changes in populations and communities. Common themes of state change, connectivity, resilience, time lags, and cascading effects are identified as key predictions across different ecosystems within the LTER network.

Plant traits and soil fertility mediate productivity losses under extreme drought in C3 grasslands

Wentao Luo et al.

Summary: Extreme drought reduces aboveground net primary production (ANPP) in most grasslands, with differential responses observed in C-3-dominated grasslands. This study experimentally imposed a 4-year extreme drought on two C-3 grasslands of different aridity levels, revealing varying impacts and interactions between plant traits, soil moisture, and ANPP in response to drought. The results highlight the importance of both soil moisture and plant traits in influencing ANPP under extreme drought conditions.

Divergent responses of primary production to increasing precipitation variability in global drylands

Summary: The study found a hump-shaped response of aboveground net primary production (ANPP) to precipitation variability in global drylands with mean annual precipitation (MAP) <500 mm year(-1). The response was positive when MAP <300 mm year(-1) and negative when MAP was higher, with a positive peak at 140 mm year(-1).

Extreme drought has limited effects on soil seed bank composition in desert grasslands

Alejandro Loydi et al.

Summary: In the blue grama community, rainfall treatments increased above-ground vegetation and seed bank richness, while not affecting the black grama community. Vegetation cover was affected by both rainfall manipulations, but seed bank density increased or remained the same. Drought led to an increase in cover of annual and perennial forbs in above-ground vegetation.
