Higher complication rate after nail compared with plate fixation of ankle fractures in patients aged 60 years or older: a prospective, randomized controlled trial

I. K. Stake et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the functional and radiological outcomes and complications between nail and plate fixation for unstable ankle fractures in elderly patients. The study found that after 24 months, the functional scores were similar in both the nail and plate fixation groups, but there were more complications and secondary operations in the nail fixation group. Therefore, plate fixation should usually be the treatment of choice for unstable ankle fractures in the elderly.

Posterior Antiglide Plating vs Lateral Neutralization Plating for Weber B Distal Fibular Fractures: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Clinical and Biomechanical Studies

Yi Deng et al.

Summary: A systematic review and meta-analysis compared clinical and biomechanical outcomes of posterior antiglide plating and lateral neutralization plating for Weber B distal fibular fractures. The results showed that posterior antiglide plating is associated with fewer reoperations for hardware removal and less hardware discomfort compared to lateral neutralization plating, without increasing the risk of peroneal tendon irritation or operative time.

Complications After Surgical Treatment of Geriatric Ankle Fractures

Reinier W. A. Spek et al.

Summary: The incidence of postoperative complications among geriatric patients after surgical treatment of ankle fractures is high, with wound-related complications being the most common. Increased age is an independent predictive variable for the occurrence of postoperative complications, while extended cast immobilization is a protective factor for the development of wound-related complications.
