How Universal Is Palliative Care in Colombia? A Health Policy and Systems Analysis

Tania Pastrana et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the healthcare system reform and health policies in Colombia in relation to palliative care. Despite some achievements in integrating palliative care, there is still a shortage of services. This may be due to factors such as limited health worker education. Further research is needed to evaluate the impact of these factors on the integration of palliative care.

Can You Hear Us Now? Equity in Global Advocacy for Palliative Care

William E. Rosa et al.

Summary: Evidence-based advocacy is crucial for ensuring sustainable delivery of quality palliative care that is universally available. Currently, only 12% of the global palliative care need is being met, leaving over 60 million people in low- and middle-income countries without access to essential palliative care services and medicines. Palliative care advocacy aims to address the global public health inequity, focusing on barriers such as urban/rural divides, cancer-centeredness, service delivery gaps, opioid formulary limitations, public policy, and education deficits. LMIC palliative care practitioners are often marginalized in health policymaking and academic literature, highlighting the need for investment in transnational advocacy initiatives, research on access and cost-effective models in LMICs, and capacity building for a global community of practice to engage policymakers.

Decision making in the end-of-life care of patients who are terminally ill with cancer - a qualitative descriptive study with a phenomenological approach from the experience of healthcare workers

Angela Luna-Meza et al.

Summary: Health professionals in Colombia consider patients' clinical condition, cultural and social context, as well as their own professional skills and expertise when making end-of-life medical decisions for cancer patients. Lack of patient awareness, fear of confrontation with family members and lawsuits, and ambiguity in decision-making processes are common challenges faced by professionals in this context. Promoting open discussions, palliative care education, and development of care plans are necessary steps to improve end-of-life decision making and care for Colombian patients.

Cancer as a Chronic Illness in Colombia: A Normative Consensus Approach to Improving Healthcare Services for those Living with and beyond Cancer and Its Treatment

Cindy V. Mendieta et al.

Summary: This study identified six main priorities for cancer survivorship care in Colombia through a consensus approach. Patients and clinicians had differing views on priorities, with patients emphasizing psychosocial support and clinicians focusing on symptom management and surveillance for cancer recurrence. Developing survivorship care needs to consider both perspectives, including barriers such as access to services and socioeconomic disparities.
