Association between Non-Face-to-Face Interactions and Incident Disability in Older Adults

O. Katayama et al.

Summary: This observational prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the association between the incidence of disability and non-face-to-face interactions among community-dwelling older adults in Japan. The study found that individuals with face-to-face interactions or only one kind of interaction had a lower incidence of disability compared to those with no interactions. Therefore, clinicians may achieve better outcomes in disease prevention by considering the interaction status of older adults in their day-to-day practice and encouraging them to engage in any form of interaction, including non-face-to-face interactions.

Neighborhood Socioeconomic Disadvantage and Mortality Among Medicare Beneficiaries Hospitalized for Acute Myocardial Infarction, Heart Failure, and Pneumonia

Zachary Hermes et al.

Summary: This study examines the association between neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage and 30-day mortality rates for acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, and pneumonia in the US, revealing higher mortality rates in more disadvantaged neighborhoods even after adjusting for individual-level factors. This has implications for policymakers aiming to address health equity under value-based programs.

Using latent class analysis, four classes of activity patterns were identified, and it was found that physical frailty and cognitive impairment were independently associated with certain types of lower engagement in activities.

Association Between Neighborhood Disadvantage and Functional Well-being in Community-Living Older Persons

Thomas M. Gill et al.

Summary: This study found that living in a disadvantaged neighborhood can affect active life expectancy and the percentage of projected remaining life with disability among older individuals, suggesting that interventions in resource-poor environments may help improve functional well-being and reduce health disparities in the US.
