Trace and Rare Earth Element (REE) Geochemistry of Recently Formed Stromatolites at Lake Salda, SW Turkey

Mustafa Kaya et al.

Summary: Stromatolites, the oldest recognized fossil recordings of life on Earth, are studied to investigate the environmental conditions at which they formed. This research focuses on the geochemical characteristics of rare earth elements (REEs) and the behavior of redox-sensitive trace elements in stromatolites newly formed in Salda Lake, SW Turkey. The stromatolite samples collected from Salda Lake show high contents of MgO, CO2+OH, and MgO/CaO ratio, indicating microbial control and subtidal deposition with hydro-magnesite and aragonite mineralogy. The average trace element contents of the stromatolites exhibit specific patterns. The Post-Archean Australian Shale (PAAS)-normalized REE patterns reveal oxidizing environmental conditions in partially warm lake waters. The hydromagnesite composition of the Salda Lake stromatolites suggests precipitation from Mg-rich meteoric waters influenced by nearby serpentinite rocks.

Taxonomic Structure of Planktonic Protist Communities inSaline and Hypersaline Continental Waters Revealedby Metabarcoding

Elena A. Gerasimova et al.

Summary: By analyzing planktonic communities of protists in 38 saline and hypersaline water environments, we found significant differences in the taxonomic structure of these communities depending on salinity, geographic location, and pH. Centrohelids showed adaptability to different salinity environments, with the species Pinjata ruminata and Yogsothoth sp. assumed to be specifically adapted to salinity of 3-210%. These findings are important for understanding the taxonomy and diversity of protists in saline and hypersaline environments, and highlight the potential for discovering new taxa.

The Holocene environmental changes revealed from the sediments of the Yarkov sub-basin of Lake Chany, south-western Siberia

S. K. Krivonogov et al.

Summary: The largest endorheic lake in Siberia, Lake Chany, is found to be very young, dating back no more than 3.6 thousand years ago. The lake originally started as a swampy landscape before transforming into a shallow lake 3.6 thousand years ago, eventually reaching its modern depth of 6.5 meters in the last millennium. The research also provides insights into the regional vegetation and climate change in the West-Siberian forest-steppe and steppe over the past 4 thousand years.

Assessment of the relationship of the salt-covered area and the groundwater storage/drought indicators in the disappearing Lake Tuz in Turkey (1985-2021)

Fulya Aydin-Kandemir et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the relationship between the expansion of the salt-covered area of Lake Tuz in Turkey and the regional drought and groundwater storage changes. The results show that the salt-covered area on the lake surface is strongly correlated with the spring drought conditions, contributing to 62% of the salt-covered area in August. The study also reveals a moderate correlation between groundwater storage and the salt-covered area, indicating decreasing groundwater storage and increasing salt-covered area trends over the past 37 years.

Imaging of Ancient Microbial Biomarkers within Miocene Dolomite (Kuwait) Using Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry

Ammar S. Alibrahim et al.

Summary: Time-of-Flight-Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) using a bismuth liquid metal ion source was used to characterize and image microbial biomarkers in Miocene dolomite in Kuwait. The analysis revealed lipid biomarkers of ancient microbial consortia involved in the anaerobic oxidation of methane. The co-localization of biomarkers with dolomite and halite suggests the importance of high-salinity conditions for dolomite formation.

Carbon storage and burial in thermokarst lakes of permafrost peatlands

R. M. Manasypov et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the stocks and accumulation rates of organic carbon (OC) and total nitrogen (TN) in sediments of thermokarst lakes in the Western Siberian Lowland. The results show an increase in OC and TN stocks in lake sediments with changes in permafrost. These lakes play an important role in the carbon cycle and should be considered in understanding the impacts of climate change and permafrost thaw.

High Mg/Ca Molar Ratios Promote Protodolomite Precipitation Induced by the Extreme Halophilic Bacterium Vibrio harveyi QPL2

Zuozhen Han et al.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between bacterial activity and the formation of protodolomite under various Mg/Ca molar ratios. The results show that bacterial activity is critical for protodolomite formation, especially under high Mg/Ca molar ratios. The high Mg/Ca molar ratio also affects the composition of organic components in bacterial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), leading to the precipitation of protodolomite.

Long and short-term assessment of surface area changes in saline and freshwater lakes via remote sensing

Nur Yagmur et al.

Summary: Through advancements in remote sensing technology, this paper grouped and conducted temporal analysis on 18 natural lakes in the Konya Closed Basin of Turkey, observing changes in surface area for lakes with different salinity levels over time. While freshwater lake surfaces remained relatively stable, there was a 32% decrease in surface area for saline lakes. Beysehir Lake and Tuz Lake were selected for short-term analysis to verify cause and effect relationships using optical and SAR images.

The role of Mg2+ in inhibiting CaCO3 precipitation from seawater

Yiwen Pan et al.

Summary: The presence of Mg2+ in seawater inhibits CaCO3 precipitation, particularly at the nucleation stage, leading to aragonite nucleation at a seawater Mg:Ca ratio of 5.2. Only calcite and aragonite seeds exhibit significant catalysis of CaCO3 precipitation, indicating that not all particles in natural seawater can catalyze this process.

Spatial Patterns of Organic and Inorganic Carbon in Lake Qinghai Surficial Sediments and Carbon Burial Estimation

Xi Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of total organic carbon (TOC) and inorganic carbon (TIC) in Lake Qinghai, the largest saline lake in China. Results showed higher TOC content near human activities and lower in other areas, while TIC content increased towards the lake center, primarily depending on hydro-chemical and hydraulic characteristics. The inorganic carbon burial was approximately equal to organic carbon burial, suggesting that saline lakes contribute significantly to the global carbon budget.

Have Sustained Acidic Deposition Decreases Led to Increased Calcium Availability in Recovering Watersheds of the Adirondack Region of New York, USA?

Gregory Lawrence et al.

Summary: Soil calcium depletion in response to acidic deposition in eastern North America has been well documented, but the recovery of calcium availability, particularly in the B horizon, where depletion is most severe, remains slow. This study conducted in the Adirondack region of New York, USA, shows an increase in exchangeable calcium in the Oe horizon but no significant changes in the Oa and B horizons among individual watersheds. Liming of calcium-depleted watersheds led to a notable increase in calcium concentration in the upper B horizon, while unlimed watersheds experienced a decrease in stream calcium over time.
