Impact of leachate and landfill gas on the ecosystem and health: Research trends and the forward towards

Arpita Ghosh et al.

Summary: Globally, the increase in solid waste generation and the risks posed by climate change are major concerns. The widespread practice of landfill disposal of municipal solid waste is expanding with population growth and urbanization. Properly treated waste can be used to produce renewable energy. The recent COP 27 event emphasized the production of renewable energy to achieve the Net Zero target. Landfills are the most significant anthropogenic source of methane emission, which is both a greenhouse gas and a main component of biogas. Landfill leachate and methane emissions are discussed in this study, with a focus on reducing methane emission technology and its environmental impact. The combined therapy method is suggested for treating mixed leachate. Circular material management, entrepreneurship ideas, blockchain, machine learning, life cycle assessment (LCA) in waste management, and economic benefits from methane production are emphasized. Bibliometric analysis of 908 articles from the past 37 years shows that industrialized nations, particularly the United States, dominate research in this field.

Performance of biocover in controlling methane emissions from landfill: A decade of full-scale investigation

Mait Kriipsalu et al.

Summary: This study monitored a fully instrumented biocover at a closed landfill in Saaremaa Island, Estonia, to reduce methane emissions. After 10 years of monitoring, changes in methane, carbon dioxide, and temperature were observed. The study found that methane concentration and oxidation process activity varied across the biocover layer at different depths within the landfill. Based on data analysis, the methane oxidation process stabilizes in the biocover within 5-6 years after implementation.

A quantification of the short-term reliability of HDPE geomembrane seaming methods

A. Gilson-Beck et al.

Summary: This study provides a preliminary approximation of the difference in seam reliability between fusion seams and extrusion seams of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembranes based on leaks that exist at the end of installation. The reliability of the two seaming methods is compared using the number of leaks associated with extrusion seams versus fusion seams.

Field investigation and numerical modelling of gas extraction in a heterogeneous landfill with high leachate level

Haijian Xie et al.

Summary: This study conducted a field gas extraction experiment at a large-scale landfill site with high leachate level, showing that reducing the leachate level can increase the gas flow rate. The dual-porosity model can better predict field results, indicating the importance of preferential flow caused by heterogeneity in MSWs in landfills, and the pumping pressure has a significant influence on the well radius of influence.

A dual-porosity model for coupled rainwater and landfill gas transport through capillary barrier covers

Guangyao Li et al.

Summary: A two-dimensional dual-porosity model was established to study the transport of rainwater and landfill gas through capillary barrier covers. The model was partially verified using laboratory data and field-measured data was used to determine the optimal dual-porosity parameters for a loess/gravel cover in Northwest China. The results showed that the dual-porosity model predicted a higher percolation rate and CH4 emission compared to the single-porosity model. The presence of a gravel layer had a significant influence on minimizing water percolation and CH4 emission.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the Process of Landfill Disposal in China

Hanwen Guo et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the greenhouse gas emissions from the waste sector in the European Union, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Canada, and calculated the emissions from landfill sites in China. The results showed that landfill disposal is the main source of greenhouse gas emissions in the waste sector and plays a significant role in emission reduction.

Landfill site selection by integrating fuzzy logic, AHP, and WLC method based on multi-criteria decision analysis

Riaz Zarin et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate suitable solid waste landfill sites in the capital of the country using GIS, fuzzy logic, AHP, and WLC methods. By evaluating 13 criteria factors and combining them, the study identified numerous suitable landfill sites with the help of fuzzy-WLC method. The integration of these techniques produced satisfactory results for complex topographic regions, showing the potential for better land suitability assessment.

Transport mechanisms and emission of landfill gas through various cover soil configurations in an MSW landfill using a static flux chamber technique

Mehmet Yilmaz et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the transport mechanisms and emission rates of landfill gas (LFG) from different thickness of cover soils within a municipal solid waste landfill. The results showed that LFG emission rate varied depending on the physical-chemical properties of the cover soil, organic material content, and seasonal environmental conditions. Proper cover soils can significantly reduce fugitive CH4 emissions.

Advancements in Field Testing for Locating Geomembrane Installation Damage

A. Gilson

Summary: This paper discusses recent advancements in covered geomembrane electrical leak location testing, including an improved dipole method testing ASTM standard practice. By controlling site conditions, standardizing measurement density, optimizing sensitivity, and enhancing reporting requirements, the testing effectiveness has been improved. These advancements ensure the certainty of locating all installation damage before the operational life of a containment facility.
