A Comparison of Convective and Stratiform Precipitation Microphysics of the Record-breaking Typhoon In-Fa (2021)

Zuhang Wu et al.

Summary: In July 2021, Typhoon In-Fa caused record-breaking extreme precipitation in eastern China. The study analyzed the unique precipitation microphysical properties of Typhoon In-Fa by comparing it with other typhoons from different climate regimes. Differences in drop size distribution and rain properties were observed, with convective rain showing higher raindrop concentration and larger raindrops, while stratiform rain had smaller raindrops and a significant proportion of small raindrops. The research also compared the convective precipitation of Typhoon In-Fa with other typhoons in Hainan and Taiwan, revealing differences in raindrop concentration and size. The findings provide valuable insights for improving typhoon rainfall retrieval methods.

A PCA-based clustering algorithm for the identification of stratiform and convective precipitation at the event scale: an application to the sub-hourly precipitation of Sicily, Italy

Gianluca Sottile et al.

Summary: Understanding the precipitation structure and its separation into stratiform and convective components remains a challenge for the scientific community. This study introduces a novel clustering approach to classify precipitation events in Sicily, Italy into four classes based on their hyetograph shapes and intensities, revealing higher occurrence of stratiform events in winter and spring, while convective events dominate in the summer to mid-autumn period. The proposed methodology demonstrates physical consistency when compared to a widely accepted separation approach.

Evaluation of Rainfall Erosivity Factor Estimation Using Machine and Deep Learning Models

Jimin Lee et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop machine learning models to predict the R-factor more quickly and accurately, using 1-min interval rainfall data to improve accuracy. The Deep Neural Network (DNN) showed the highest prediction accuracy among seven models, with a performance of Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) and coefficient of determination (R-2) of 0.87 in validation.
