Stringing Together Cowrie Shells in the African Archaeological Record with Special Reference to Southern Africa

Abigail Joy Moffett et al.

Summary: This paper develops a methodology for critically engaging in questions of the circulation, exchange, and value of cowrie shells in African archaeological contexts, drawing comparisons across different sites in South Africa. The prevalence of Monetaria annulus and the absence of Monetaria moneta in southern African archaeological contexts over the last 2000 years is highlighted, along with the diversity in endemic southern African cowrie species. Additionally, breakage patterns on the dorsal surface reflect different modification techniques.

INFERENCE FROM LARGE SETS OF RADIOCARBON DATES: SOFTWARE AND METHODS

Enrico R. Crema et al.

Summary: The paper introduces rcarbon, an open-source software package for the R statistical computing language that implements various statistical and computational techniques for analyzing large collections of radiocarbon dates. It reviews the key assumptions, limitations, and potentials of statistical analyses of summed probability distribution of C-14 dates, including Monte-Carlo simulation-based tests, permutation tests, and spatial analyses. Supplementary material provides a fully reproducible analysis with additional details not covered in the main paper.
