AZF gene microdeletions in azoospermic-oligozoospermic males

Raquel Lahoz Alonso et al.

Summary: This study investigated the frequencies and types of microdeletions in the Y-chromosome azoospermia factor (AZF) region in infertile men in Aragon, Spain. The presence of AZF microdeletions was found to be 3.88%, with no detection in patients with mild or non-mospermic oligozoospermia. Azoospermic patients had the highest frequency of microdeletions (14.58%), with deletions in the AZFc region being the most common (68%). Sperm count was significantly lower, and FSH and LH concentrations were significantly higher in patients with microdeletions.

Summary: A new structural variant was identified as a high-penetrance risk factor for male infertility, improving molecular diagnostics and clinical management of infertility. Identification of carriers at a young age will facilitate timely counseling and reproductive decision-making.
