Fast, specific, and ultrasensitive antibiotic residue detection by monolayer WS2-based field-effect transistor sensor

Xiaojie Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, a fast, specific, and ultrasensitive sensor based on field-effect transistor (FET) was proposed for the detection of ampicillin (AMP). The sensor showed rapid response to AMP in a wide linear detection range and had low limit of detection, meeting the permissible standards of AMP in water and food. The sensing mechanism study suggested that the excellent sensor response resulted from the increased number of negative charges in the Debye length and the consequent accumulation of holes in WS2 channel after the addition of AMP. Moreover, satisfactory sensing performance was confirmed in real water samples, indicating the potential application of the proposed method in practical AMP detection.

Summary: Recent advances in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) on semiconductor substrates have improved selectivity and cost efficiency. This study proposes a new strategy of developing semiconductor substrates based on aerogels, such as TiO2 aerogels, to generate and enhance multiresonant interband charge transfer pathways for intrinsically activated SERS. The aerogel-based SERS shows wide applicability for ultrasensitive detection of explosives and organic dyes, and provides a new approach for constructing low-cost and high-sensitivity SERS substrate materials.

Triple-Helix Molecular Switch Triggered Cleavage Effect of DNAzyme for Ultrasensitive Electrochemical Detection of Chloramphenicol

Senyao Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel electrochemical aptasensor was developed for sensitive and accurate determination of chloramphenicol (CAP) residues in animal-derived products. The aptasensor incorporated a poly-(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) functionalized graphene/Ag@Au nanosheets composite modified electrode and a DNAzyme signal amplification effect triggered by a triple-helix molecular switch (THMS). The aptasensor showed high sensitivity and specificity for CAP, and was not affected by interference from other antibiotics and common metal ions. The method also performed well when applied to measuring CAP in milk powder.

Reclaimed wastewater reuse in irrigation: Role of biofilms in the fate of antibiotics and spread of antimicrobial resistance

M. Brienza et al.

Summary: Reclaimed wastewater associated biofilms contain diverse antibiotic resistance genes and mobile genetic elements, with antibiotics partially degraded but still above minimum inhibitory concentrations. The bacterial community composition and diversity are the main factors influencing resistance selection and propagation in biofilms. Increase in certain genera known to harbor antibiotic resistance genes in reclaimed wastewater exposed to antibiotics suggests the importance of maintaining high diversity to limit resistance dissemination among planktonic bacteria.
