Direct evidence of terahertz emission arising from anomalous Hall effect

Venkatesh Mottamchetty et al.

Summary: The report presents direct evidence of THz emission from single layer Co0.4Fe0.4B0.2 (CoFeB) FM thin films, with the dominant mechanism being the anomalous Hall effect (AHE). The AHE is caused by a net backflow current in the FM layer created by the spin polarized current reflected at the interfaces of the FM layer. The THz emission from the AHE-based CoFeB emitter is optimized by varying its thickness, orientation, and pump fluence of the laser beam. Results from electrical transport measurements show that skew scattering of charge carriers is responsible for the THz emission in the CoFeB AHE-based THz emitter.

Broadband Spintronic Terahertz Source with Peak Electric Fields Exceeding 1.5 MV/cm

R. Rouzegar et al.

Summary: In this work, we significantly enhance the performance of an optically pumped spintronic terahertz emitter (STE) by optimizing the photonic and thermal environment. The terahertz pulses generated using high-energy pump pulses exhibit high electric fields and fluences comparable to those of a state-of-the-art terahertz source based on optical rectification. The optimized STE design retains the advantages of the standard design, but without the power loss associated with LiNbO3 setups, making it a promising tool for nonlinear terahertz spectroscopy. The emitted terahertz pulse using low-energy laser pulses shows a 2-fold improvement in electric field and covers a wider spectrum.

Terahertz spintronic magnetometer (TSM)

Piyush Agarwal et al.

Summary: A ferromagnetic metal is composed of localized electrons and conduction electrons that are coupled through strong exchange interaction. Non-equilibrium photoexcitation of the ferromagnetic thin films generates a transient spin current, which can be converted into a pulsed charge current and terahertz emission in the presence of a neighboring heavy metal layer. The proposed terahertz spintronic magnetometry tool allows reliable in-plane magnetization detection of ferromagnetic thin films and has technological importance in their characterization.

Cascaded Amplification and Manipulation of Terahertz Emission by Flexible Spintronic Heterostructures

Zuanming Jin et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates an efficient and practical approach to enhance and manipulate THz generation based on a cascaded Pt/CoFe/Ta trilayer fabricated on a flexible PET substrate. The cascaded design enables all THz emission from each PET/STE propagating almost in-phase and yields a 1.55 times amplification compared to a single PET/STE. Two proof-of-concept demonstrations highlight the potential of flexible PET/STE for building blocks of advanced functionalities.

Impact of various spintronic antenna structures driven by a 795 nm pump beam to terahertz (THz) wave generation

Miezel Talara et al.

Summary: In this study, we compared the THz emission properties of different-shaped spintronic antennas and found that the rectangular antenna generated the highest signal amplitude, but there was no significant difference in the radiation spectra. Further experiments with a rectangular antenna incorporating a Pt layer showed a 4.2x improvement in signal amplitude, as well as changes in bandwidth and peak frequency, suggesting that spintronic antennas can be optimized for specific applications.

Ultrafast spin current generated from an antiferromagnet

Hongsong Qiu et al.

Summary: Antiferromagnets (AFMs) have the potential to push spintronic devices to terahertz range for high-speed processing, but their insensitivity to magnetic fields makes spin current manipulation difficult. By optically generating ultrafast spin currents in AFM/HM heterostructures, a new avenue for fundamental research into antiferromagnetism and AFM spintronic devices has been opened.

Terahertz Generation via Picosecond Spin-to-Charge Conversion in IrMn3/Ni-Fe Heterojunction

Summary: The experimental investigation of ultrafast electro-optical properties in magnetic materials shows great potential for spintronic optoelectronic devices. A spintronic terahertz emitter was constructed using time-resolved terahertz emission spectroscopy with an IrMn3/Ni-Fe heterojunction. The spin current generated in the Ni-Fe layer is converted into a charge current by the IrMn3 layer, allowing for timely recording of the terahertz emission.

Optical damage limit of efficient spintronic THz emitters

Sandeep Kumar et al.

Summary: THz pulses are generated from femtosecond pulse-excited ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic spintronic heterostructures via inverse spin Hall effect. The highest possible THz signal strength from spintronic THz emitters is limited by the optical damage threshold of the corresponding heterostructures at the excitation wavelength. For the thickness-optimized spintronic heterostructure, the THz generation efficiency does not saturate with the excitation fluence even up till the damage threshold.
