Propolis characterization and antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans: A review

Sarra Bouchelaghem

Summary: Propolis, a plant-based sticky substance produced by honeybees, has been traditionally used as a folk medicine and possesses various pharmaceutical properties. It shows antimicrobial effects against multidrug-resistant microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. The chemical composition and physical properties of propolis vary depending on its geographic origin and plant sources. Flavonoids, phenols, diterpenes, and aliphatic compounds are the main chemicals responsible for the antimicrobial activity of propolis. The mechanism of action of propolis is still not fully understood due to the synergistic interaction of its ingredients, but it has been suggested to cause structural damage to microorganisms. The broad-spectrum biological potentials of propolis make it an ideal candidate for the development of new, potent, and cost-effective antimicrobial agents.
