Single-atom Cu catalyst in a zirconium-based metal-organic framework for biomass conversion

Yushan Wu et al.

Summary: A single-atom catalyst, Cu@UiO-66(COOH)(2), was prepared by a simple and efficient solvothermal strategy, where Cu atoms were coordinated to the defect sites of SBUs in a Zr-based MOF UiO-66(COOH)(2). This catalyst showed high activity for the hydrogenation of levulinic acid to gamma-valerolactone through catalytic transfer hydrogenation process, achieving a GVL yield of 96.7%. The excellent catalytic performance can be attributed to the site isolation and uniform distribution of single Cu atoms combined with the presence of acid sites in the MOF.

Single-atom catalysts with metal-acid synergistic effect toward hydrodeoxygenation tandem reactions

Summary: By anchoring a single-atom Pt catalyst onto a Co2AlO4 spinel support, exceptional catalytic performance in hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of 5-(hydroxymethyl) furfural to produce 2,5-dimethylfuran was achieved (yield: 99% and turnover frequency: 2,553 h-1). The single Pt atom facilitates C=O bond activation and accelerates the rate-determining step of the first C-OH bond cleavage, while the adjacent Bronsted acid site on the support enhances the second C-O bond dissociation. Moreover, this catalyst demonstrates universality in HDO of other biomass and nitro compounds.
