Understanding hydrogen evolution reaction in bicarbonate buffer

Giulia Marcandalli et al.

Summary: The mechanism of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in bicarbonate-containing electrolytes on Au and Pt electrodes has been investigated. The presence of bicarbonate buffer can promote the HER rate and change the reaction mechanism. However, bicarbonate is consumed by acid-base reactions, and the bicarbonate branch of HER becomes significant only with large bulk buffer concentrations.

Electrolyte Engineering for Oxygen Evolution Reaction Over Non-Noble Metal Electrodes Achieving High Current Density in the Presence of Chloride Ion

Hiroki Komiya et al.

Summary: Direct seawater electrolysis simplifies the process and reduces the cost of green hydrogen production, but impurities in seawater, especially chloride ions, can cause electrode corrosion. The CoFeOxHy/Ti electrode with carefully tuned properties shows efficient oxygen evolution reaction catalysis with an active site motif and enlarged surface area.

High Current Density Oxygen Evolution in Carbonate Buffered Solution Achieved by Active Site Densification and Electrolyte Engineering

Takeshi Nishimoto et al.

Summary: Efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with high current density reaching 1 A cm(-2) was achieved through interactive optimization of electrolyte and electrode at non-extreme pH levels. The OER performance was improved by introducing Cu or Au as the third element during electrode preparation, leading to enhanced electrochemical surface area.

Data-driven automated robotic experiments accelerate discovery of multi-component electrolyte for rechargeable Li-O2 batteries

Shoichi Matsuda et al.

Summary: In this study, automated high-throughput robotic experiments with machine-learning methodologies were used to discover an electrolyte composition suitable for high reaction efficiencies in both the oxygen and lithium electrodes of Li-O-2 batteries. The identified electrolyte composition enhanced the discharge/ charge performance of the batteries, achieving stability over 100 cycles with a capacity of 0.5 mAh/cm(2). Data-driven high-throughput screening methods offer new opportunities for efficiently identifying electrolyte compositions and accelerating the development of next-generation rechargeable batteries.

Delivering the Full Potential of Oxygen Evolving Electrocatalyst by Conditioning Electrolytes at Near-Neutral pH

Takeshi Nishimoto et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of buffer ions on OER performance using a model IrOx electrocatalyst, finding that the OER kinetics is more efficient with OH- oxidation compared to H2O. The research highlights how the presence of a buffer can significantly reduce overpotential and improve performance by facilitating local OH- supply kinetics.

Evaluation of Diaphragms and Membranes as Separators for Alkaline Water Electrolysis

Joern Brauns et al.

Summary: The separator is a critical component in alkaline water electrolysis, affecting the ionic contact between electrodes and the impurity of product gases. Traditional diaphragms require a high concentration of electrolyte, but the use of anion-exchange membranes could potentially solve this issue. The study shows that a thinner diaphragm outperforms the reference material, and polymer membranes have the potential to compete with the performance of traditional diaphragms.

Ohmic resistance in zero gap alkaline electrolysis with a Zirfon diaphragm

Matheus T. de Groot et al.

Summary: Traditional alkaline water electrolyzers operate at low current densities due to high internal ohmic resistance. Using modern diaphragms like Zirfon and a zero gap configuration could potentially allow for operation at higher current densities. However, data analysis reveals that the area resistances are significantly higher in zero gap alkaline electrolyzers, suggesting factors like uneven current distribution and the presence of nanobubbles may contribute to the increased resistance.

Using a vapor-fed anode and saline catholyte to manage ion transport in a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer

Ruggero Rossi et al.

Summary: A new method using humidified gas stream for the anode and liquid saltwater catholyte is proposed to reduce chlorine generation and improve performance in hydrogen production. The charge repulsion of chloride ions by the proton exchange membrane results in lower chlorine generation and high faradaic efficiencies for oxygen evolution. This vapor-fed anode configuration allows for direct use of saltwater in conventional electrolyzers without additional water purification.
