Towards energy security by promoting circular economy: A holistic approach

Manuel Taifouris et al.

Summary: Dependence on fossil fuels and supply disruptions by natural gas suppliers pose a threat to the energy security of European countries. Therefore, analyzing the potential of a circular economy to reduce reliance on fossil natural gas is crucial. This study evaluates the availability of waste and models waste treatment processes as well as analyzing the necessary infrastructure and optimizing the technology and location for waste valorization. The results show that Spain has the potential to cover 35% of its natural gas demand through a circular economy approach, with 19 provinces becoming self-sufficient in natural gas.

Techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment of olive and wine industry co-products valorisation

Joao S. Ramos et al.

Summary: This study investigates the valorisation of olive and wine industry co-products through different thermochemical processes. The characterization and life cycle assessment (LCA) of the biomass are conducted to evaluate the suitability and environmental impacts of various conversion processes. Techno-economic analysis is also performed to assess the feasibility of each scenario. The results suggest that gasification and pyrolysis are promising alternatives for the valorisation of olive pomace and grape marc, respectively.

Robust optimization of sustainable food supply chain network considering food waste valorization and supply uncertainty

Ramesh Krishnan et al.

Summary: This study presents an integrated robust multi-objective optimization model for designing a sustainable food supply chain (FSC). The model considers economic, social, and environmental sustainability dimensions, as well as perishability, food waste valorization, and supply uncertainty. Applied to a real-time case of the Indian mango pulp supply chain, the model provides insights for transforming the FSC towards sustainability.

Upgrading wineries to biorefineries within a Circular Economy perspective: An Italian case study

A. Ncube et al.

Summary: Through a comprehensive environmental and life cycle assessment of traditional wine production in Italy, it was discovered that there were environmental impacts, particularly in the bottling phase. By introducing a biorefinery system based on winery waste, useful bio-based products like grapeseed oil and calcium tartrate can be recovered, leading to an upgrade to more sustainable production patterns in the wine industry.
