Bioprocess development for the production of xylooligosaccharide prebiotics from agro-industrial lignocellulosic waste

Cheng-Di Dong et al.

Summary: The development of sustainable biorefineries and bioeconomy has become a priority for governments worldwide, aiming at addressing climate change concerns and ensuring global food supply chain. Xylooligosaccharides (XOS) have gained significant research attention due to their prebiotic potential as a nutraceutical. Utilizing agro-industrial crop and food waste to produce XOS, derived from the hemicellulose fraction of lignocellulosic materials, offers potential advantages. However, the traditional methods for xylan extraction have limited industrial application, necessitating the use of cutting-edge and environmentally friendly pretreatment methods and technologies. This review outlines the factors involved in xylan extraction and depolymerization processes, as well as the potential of different types of oligosaccharides as prebiotics for gut health.

Xylo-oligosaccharides, fermentable sugars, and bioenergy production from sugarcane straw using steam explosion pretreatment at pilot-scale

Livia B. Brenelli et al.

Summary: This study investigated the production of xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) from sugarcane straw (SCS) using steam explosion (SE) pretreatment at pilot-scale, as well as co-production of fermentable sugars and lignin-rich residues for bioethanol and bioenergy, respectively. The SE conditions led to high yields of soluble XOS and fermentable glucose, as well as increased energy content of the saccharified SCS residues.

Flowsheet Analysis of Valourising Mixed Lignocellulose and Plastic Wastes via Fast Pyrolysis at a Paper Mill

Abdul M. Petersen et al.

Summary: A valorizing process in a recycling paper mill converts plastic-fibre rejects into oil, char, and utility energy through pyrolysis to provide renewable energy and minimize waste disposal. The economic and technical responses are measured by varying the conversion temperature, feedstock characteristics, and energy recovery methods to optimize the process. Simulation and economic models show that pyrolysis at 450 degrees C is most energy efficient and increasing the feed rate of PFRs could potentially reduce the minimum fuel selling price to a competitive level.
