The E factor at 30: a passion for pollution prevention

Roger Arthur Sheldon

Summary: The introduction of the E Factor in 1992 led to a shift in the concept of efficiency in chemical processes, emphasizing the value of waste elimination. It has now become clear that waste is the underlying cause of major environmental problems, and the solution lies in pollution prevention and sustainable chemistry. This article examines the role of (bio)catalysis, alternative solvents, a carbon neutral circular economy, and the electrification of chemicals manufacture in achieving pollution prevention and sustainable industries.

Synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 and gold nanoparticles in a sustained out-of-equilibrium state

Brigitta Duzs et al.

Summary: The design and synthesis of crystalline materials require proper control over size and polydispersity. In this study, an out-of-equilibrium method using a continuous two-side feed of reagents in a hydrogel matrix was utilized to generate ZIF-8 crystals. The size and polydispersity of the crystals were controlled by mass fluxes of reagents and reaction time. This approach was also shown to be applicable for synthesizing gold nanoparticles in a redox process.

Effect of the Polarity of Solvents on Periodic Precipitation: Formation of Hierarchical Revert Liesegang Patterns

Gabor Hollo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of solvent polarity on the evolving structure of Liesegang pattern (LP) using a copper chromate system in water/organic solvent mixtures. Results show that LP morphology undergoes significant changes with increasing DMSO content, leading to the formation of hierarchical patterns. The simulation model with a bimodal size distribution also aligns well with experimental findings, demonstrating the potential for tailored LP designs.

Glycerol carbonate structuring in aqueous solutions as inferred from mutual diffusion coefficient, density and viscosity measurements in the temperature range 283.15-313.15 K

Nadia Valletti et al.

Summary: Glycerol Carbonate (GC) is an emerging green reactant with high reactivity and easy synthesis from glycerol, making it attractive for many organic chemistry applications. However, the transport properties of GC, especially the diffusion coefficient in water, have been poorly studied. In this study, the diffusion coefficient of GC in water was measured for the first time, and its hydrodynamic radius and aggregate structure in aqueous solutions were investigated. The findings contribute to the understanding of GC's fate in the environment and its potential applications in aqueous media.
