Solar-light-driven photocatalytic conversion of monosaccharide by oxygen-doped graphitic carbon nitride/artificial steel converter slag composite

Assadawoot Srikhaow et al.

Summary: This work reports the construction and performance of heterojunction between oxygen-doped graphitic carbon nitride and artificial steel converter slag (OCN/artCS) as efficient photocatalysts for the conversion of biomass-derived monosaccharide to lactic acid. The OCN/artCS composites exhibited higher photocatalytic performance and effective separation of photogenerated charge carriers. At the optimal content of artCS in the composites, 99% glucose conversion and 90% lactic acid yield were achieved within 60 minutes at 50 degrees Celsius under simulated sunlight irradiation.

Efficient production of lactic acid from anaerobic co-fermentation of starch and nitrogen-rich agro-industrial waste using a batch system

Tianjing Lian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of lactic acid production from carbohydrate-enrich corn starch, tapioca starch, potato starch, and rice starch with inexpensive nitrogen-rich agro-industrial waste of corn steep liquor, palm kernel cake, and soybean meal. The results showed that the co-fermentation of starch with corn steep liquor significantly enhanced the lactic acid concentration compared with the co-fermentation of starch with palm kernel cake or soybean meal. Economic analysis demonstrated that the co-fermentation of corn starch and corn steep liquor had better economic benefits than other treatments.

Photothermal strategy for the highly efficient conversion of glucose into lactic acid at low temperatures over a hybrid multifunctional multi-walled carbon nanotube/layered double hydroxide catalyst

Xin Ye et al.

Summary: A light-driven system was developed for highly selective conversion of glucose into lactic acid at low temperatures, achieving the highest lactic acid yield and selectivity through the construction of a CNT/LDHs composite catalyst. The performance was attributed to the strong heating center generated by CNTs, the catalytic activity of LDHs, and the synergistic catalytic system.

Different Reactivity of Raw Starch from Diverse Potato Genotypes

Vadim Khlestkin et al.

Summary: Research shows significant differences in the reactivity of potato starches from different sources to industrial starch modification. Although the main products of the transformations are the same, their preparative yields vary. Therefore, starch reactivity may potentially be a phenotypical trait for potato breeding to obtain suitable potato starches for specific industrial applications.

Thermal hydrolyzed food waste liquor as liquid organic fertilizer

Shumei Gao et al.

Summary: Thermal hydrolysis is an efficient technology to release nutrients and organic substances from food waste for liquid organic fertilizer production. Results show that 180 degrees Celsius is the optimal temperature for releasing total nitrogen and phosphorus, and the hydrolyzed liquor has no biotoxicity to seedlings.
