System dynamics modelling to simulate regional water-energy-food nexus combined with the society-economy-environment system in Hunan Province, China

Xinkui Wang et al.

Summary: This study incorporates society, economy and environment systems into the water-energy-food nexu,s and constructs a system dynamics model to simulate the development of the system in Hunan Province, China. The study finds that Hunan Province will have surplus of grain production and water resources, but imports will be needed to meet energy demand. As the development of the province outpaces environmental protection policies, water pollution and CO2 emissions are expected to increase. Trade-offs and synergies between different policy impacts indicate that the simultaneous implementation of multiple policies may affect progress towards certain goals.

Operationalizing water-energy-food nexus research for sustainabledevelopment in social-ecological systems: an interdisciplinary learning casein Central Asia

Ahmad Hamidov et al.

Summary: In social-ecological systems, natural resource management involves trade-offs across sectors and sustainability objectives. The water-energy-food (WEF) nexus concept aims to maximize synergies by explicitly considering various trade-offs. However, there are limited successful examples of operationalizing this concept in research. In this study, the authors explored the use of sustainability impact assessment (SIA) protocols to operationalize the WEF nexus in research for sustainable development. The findings from a week-long international workshop in Central Asia suggest that the SIA protocols adequately addressed the complexity of WEF interrelationships and associated sustainability issues. Water governance was crucial for large-scale transboundary WEF nexus management, while land and soil management played a decisive role in minimizing trade-offs at local levels. Challenges remain in ethical considerations and the design of transparent, multi-actor cooperation. Importantly, employing the SIA protocol process facilitated interdisciplinary collaboration and a systemic approach to analyzing the WEF nexus.

Application of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) in a multi-criteria selection of agricultural irrigation systems

Hadi Veisi et al.

Summary: The integrated Structure-Actor-Water framework (iSAW) was used to develop indicators for selecting a sustainable irrigation system. The analysis hierarchical process (AHP) was used to gather the views of stakeholders and measure the relative importance of different indicators. The results showed a preference for pressurized irrigation systems and highlighted the importance of socio-economic factors in decision-making for the irrigated agriculture sector.

System dynamics simulation of regional water supply and demand using a food-energy-water nexus approach: Application to Qazvin Plain, Iran

Mohammad Mahdi Naderi et al.

Summary: This study uses system dynamics modeling to simulate the future development trends of the water resources system in Qazvin Plain, Iran, and finds that continuing existing management policies will cause severe damage to water and energy sectors, pushing water resources development to its limits. To delay the issue of water limits to growth in the region, it is crucial to implement water demand and supply management policies.
