The effects of periodically stagnant soil water conditions on biomass and methane yields of Silphium perfoliatum

Thorsten Ruf et al.

Summary: Due to the wide usage of bio-methane, anaerobic digestion has become a significant issue. Perennial energy crops have been widely cultivated in Europe and they have the advantage of high energy yields and ecological benefits. Cup plant may be a better option than silage maize for cultivation on soils with excessive soil moisture. In this study, cup plant showed higher biomass yields on Stagnosols, but methane yields were still lower compared to silage maize.

Hillslope erosion improvement targets: Towards sustainable land management across New South Wales, Australia

Xihua Yang et al.

Summary: Hillslope erosion is the dominant form of erosion in Australia and many parts of the world. This study developed a new approach for setting hillslope erosion improvement (HEI) targets by considering seasonal erosion levels and land management practices. The findings can help identify areas and periods with excessive erosion and suggest management actions for soil improvement.

Projection of rainfall intensity-duration-frequency curves at ungauged location under climate change scenarios

Muhammad Noor et al.

Summary: This study proposed a method for constructing IDF curves at ungauged locations under climate change scenarios, with a case study in peninsular Malaysia. The research found that future rainfall intensity will vary under different RCPs, with more pronounced changes for short-duration rainfall and higher emission scenarios.

Assessing variability of soil water balance components measured at a new lysimeter facility dedicated to the study of soil ecosystem services

Shannon Brown et al.

Summary: Diversifying annual crop rotations is believed to promote various soil ecosystem services, and a study using high-precision lysimeters was conducted to measure water balance components for different soils. Different data processing procedures introduced minimal errors in water budget variables, and there was spatial variability observed for certain components. The study provides insights for future comparisons of water balance components and demonstrates the suitability of the facility for examining the impacts of crop diversification on soil ecosystem services.

Estimation of root-zone soil moisture using crop water stress index (CWSI) in agricultural fields

Venkata Radha Akuraju et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of thermal infrared remote sensing to estimate Root-Zone Soil Moisture (RZSM) in agricultural fields, using the Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI) as an indicator. Linear and exponential models were developed to predict RZSM using CWSI, showing errors of 3.9% and 5.3% in two different cropping seasons. Validation results support the potential role of CWSI in root-zone soil moisture estimations.

Mechanisms of Waterlogging Tolerance in Plants: Research Progress and Prospects

Jiawei Pan et al.

Summary: Waterlogging is a major abiotic stress for plants, affecting their energy metabolism and growth processes. Plants respond by regulating their morphology, energy metabolism, hormone synthesis, and signaling pathways. Future research should focus on the effects of waterlogging on plant morphology, photosynthesis, and respiration.

Wavelet analysis of soil water state variables for identification of lateral subsurface flow: Lysimeter vs. field data

Annelie Ehrhardt et al.

Summary: Preferential and lateral subsurface flow play a significant role in the accelerated transport of water and solutes in sloping agricultural landscapes. By comparing time series of soil moisture observations in the field with lysimeters, this study identified periods of deviations in response to rain events. The wavelet coherency analysis revealed different response times and periodicities between field soil and lysimeter, indicating potential vertical and lateral flow effects.

Soil Nitrogen Dynamics in a Managed Temperate Grassland Under Changed Climatic Conditions

Mona Giraud et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the change in nitrogen dynamics in temperate grasslands due to a shift from energy-limited to water-limited climatic conditions. It found that at water-limited sites, plant nitrogen uptake decreased while inorganic nitrogen concentration in the soil solution increased. The study suggests that fertilizer should be applied early in the growing period to increase nitrogen uptake and decrease nitrogen losses in the short term.

Partitioning evapotranspiration by measuring soil water evaporation with heat-pulse sensors and plant transpiration with sap flow gauges

Yueyue Wang et al.

Summary: Partitioning evapotranspiration (ET) into soil water evaporation (E) and crop transpiration (T) accurately is crucial for effective irrigation management. The study successfully used compatible sensors to measure E and T, showing good agreement with lysimeter ET data overall, but slight discrepancies at different ET rates. Combining different measurement approaches can achieve satisfactory accuracy in partitioning ET.

Response of water fluxes and biomass production to climate change in permanent grassland soil ecosystems

Veronika Forstner et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of climate change on grassland water fluxes and aboveground biomass were investigated using two contrasting experimental approaches. The responses to climate change varied depending on whether the grassland ecosystems were energy-limited or water-limited. Both manipulative and observational experiments are necessary to thoroughly understand the impacts of climate change on grassland ecosystems.
