Predictive explicit expressions from data-driven models for estimation of scour depth below ski-jump bucket spillways

Reza Shafagh Loron et al.

Summary: Estimating scour depth is crucial in water-related engineering, as inaccurate estimation can lead to dam instability and environmental consequences. This study developed data-driven models using published prototype data to estimate scour depth below spillways. The proposed methods were evaluated using statistical metrics and were found to be effective compared to previous approaches.

Study on the Thermospheric Density Distribution Pattern during Geomagnetic Activity

Lirong Yin et al.

Summary: The atmospheric density of the thermosphere experiences significant fluctuations during magnetic storms, which negatively impact spacecraft control. This paper investigates the distribution of atmospheric density during three geomagnetic storms using the inversion results of the Swarm-C accelerometer, and finds that the impact on nighttime thermospheric density is more significant.

Seismic Response of the Ground Surface Including Underground Horseshoe-Shaped Cavity

Mehdi Panji et al.

Summary: This paper presents the seismic response of elastic ground surface with unlined horseshoe-shaped underground cavities using the time-domain half-plane boundary element method. The method shows good accuracy in modeling horseshoe-shaped tunnels and compares the response patterns between circular and horseshoe cross-sections. The results indicate significant effects of subsurface openings and horseshoe-shaped cavities on seismic patterns and critical states of the ground surface.

Uncertainty quantification of granular computing-neural network model for prediction of pollutant longitudinal dispersion coefficient in aquatic streams

Behzad Ghiasi et al.

Summary: Discharge of pollution loads into natural water systems remains a global challenge that threatens water and food supply, as well as endangering ecosystem services. This study develops an artificial intelligence-based predictive model that provides robust estimation of the rate of longitudinal dispersion (D-x) in streams under high spatiotemporal variability, addressing the large uncertainty in existing estimation models.

Numerical simulation and application of soft computing in estimating vertical drop energy dissipation with horizontal serrated edge

Mohammad Bagherzadeh et al.

Summary: This study used FLOW-3D software to simulate energy dissipation downstream of a serrated-edge structure and evaluated the accuracy of numerical models using ANN, SVM, and GEP methods. The results showed that increasing the dimensions of the edges increased energy dissipation. The ANN method demonstrated higher accuracy in predicting energy dissipation compared to the other two methods.

Prediction of the dynamic pressure distribution in hydraulic structures using soft computing methods

Mehrshad Samadi et al.

Summary: This research successfully predicted the dynamic pressure distribution of P* in flip buckets using five soft computing methods based on experimental studies. Compared to traditional linear and nonlinear regression techniques, the gene expression programming (GEP) approach demonstrated more accurate results.

Modeling of coupled transfer of water, heat and solute in saline loess considering sodium sulfate crystallization

Jian Xu et al.

Summary: The phase change of sodium sulfate plays a significant role in salt weathering of loess slopes in seasonal frozen regions. Models for heat, water, and solute transfer were established based on various empirical relationships and laws. Numerical simulations were conducted using these models on COMSOL Multiphysics, showing good agreement with experimental results.
