Riverine flood potential assessment using metaheuristic hybrid machine learning algorithms

Matej Vojtek et al.

Summary: This study combines the feed-forward neural network and extreme gradient boosting with genetic algorithm optimization to determine riverine flood potential in the Gidra river basin, Slovakia. The models achieved high accuracy and can be used to identify areas with the highest potential for riverine floods.

Research on Rain Pattern Classification Based on Machine Learning: A Case Study in Pi River Basin

Xiaodi Fu et al.

Summary: To improve the scientific nature, reliability, and accuracy of flood forecasting, constructing a flood forecasting scheme and considering different rain patterns is effective. Using machine learning methods, this study classified rain patterns and compared the performances of different models. LightGBM achieved the highest accuracy and fastest training speed, while LSTM and SVM showed higher accuracy but lower efficiency, and DT had fast classification speed but lower accuracy. Increasing the sampling size improved classification accuracy and training efficiency.

Physically-based, distributed hydrologic model for Makkah watershed using GPM satellite rainfall and ground rainfall stations

Ahmed M. Al-Areeq et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand flooding in a 1,725-km(2) arid catchment in Makkah Province, Saudi Arabia, using a physically based hydrologic model calibrated and validated with limited ground observations and high-resolution satellite rainfall products. Significant differences were found in rainfall estimates from different IMERG products, leading to the development of a method to adjust biases using ground observations. The study highlights the vulnerability of densely urbanized areas in flood zones and the importance of accurate rainfall data for flood prediction and management.
