Degradation of a non-oxidizing biocide in circulating cooling water using UV/persulfate: Kinetics, pathways, and cytotoxicity

Jinzhi Cui et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the oxidative degradation of isothiazolinone by UV/persulfate technology and found that the presence of .OH and SO4.- in the UV/PS system significantly contributed to the degradation of CMIT-MIT. The degradation efficiency of CMIT-MIT was improved with UV/PS compared to only UV or oxidant, and showed a slight decrease with increasing pH. The UV/PS process effectively reduced the cytotoxicity of CMIT-MIT within 20 minutes, demonstrating its potential as a water treatment technology.

Synergistic effects of ozone/peroxymonosulfate for isothiazolinone biocides degradation: Kinetics, synergistic performance and influencing factors*

Zheng-Wei Yang et al.

Summary: The synergistic effects of ozone and peroxymonosulfate on the degradation of isothiazolinone biocides were studied. The results showed that the synergistic ozonation process significantly improved the degradation efficiency, mainly through the involvement of hydroxyl radicals and oxidation. Solution pH, chloride ions, and bicarbonate were found to influence the process.

Parabens as emerging contaminants: Environmental persistence, current practices and treatment processes

Francisca Vale et al.

Summary: Water contamination by emerging contaminants, such as endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) and pharmaceuticals, is a significant environmental problem. One specific group of EDCs, parabens, widely used in daily products, poses health risks, especially to the endocrine system. Current wastewater treatment technologies are not effective in removing these contaminants, requiring innovative approaches. Microalgae bioremediation shows promise in removing parabens, but large-scale applications face challenges.

Removal of methylisothiazolinone biocide from wastewater by VUV/UV advanced oxidation process: Kinetics, mechanisms and toxicity

Nan Huang et al.

Summary: Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) is efficiently degraded by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)/ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, with the presence of .center dot & nbsp;OH as the main oxidant. The degradation efficiency of MIT under VUV/UV irradiation is higher than under UV irradiation, and is influenced by solution pH and the concentration of CO32- /HCO3-. The study also identified the main degradation mechanisms of MIT as sulfur atom oxidation and hydroxyl addition, with VUV/UV degradation being an effective method to remove MIT toxicity.

Mild Fenton Processes for the Removal of Preservatives: Interfering Effect of Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) on Paraben Degradation

Victoria Duarte-Alvarado et al.

Summary: The degradation of various preservatives in the cosmetics industry was investigated using a mild photo-Fenton process. The presence of iron chelators improved the degradation process, but the complexing effect of humic-like substances was found to be ineffective in the case of methylisothiazolinone (MIT). The inhibitory effect of MIT on the degradation of parabens was observed, suggesting the formation of a complex between iron and MIT. The findings highlight the importance of using mixtures of model contaminants in future studies to understand the behavior of the whole system.

Cavitation based cleaner technologies for biodiesel production and processing of hydrocarbon streams: A perspective on key fundamentals, missing process data and economic feasibility - A review

Elvana Cako et al.

Summary: The review focuses on the role of hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) and acoustic cavitation in clean and green technologies for fuel processing applications. It examines the effects of different cavitation reactors, liquid properties, catalyst loading, and reaction conditions on the efficiency of various processes. The results suggest that HC-based processes are more cost-effective than acoustic cavitation-based devices for desulfurization and biodiesel production.

Cosmetic wastewater treatment technologies: a review

Despina A. Gkika et al.

Summary: In the past three decades, there has been growing concerns about water pollution on both societal and industrial levels. The presence of pollutants from cosmetic products in wastewater has been documented in both industrial and wastewater treatment plants. To address this issue, a series of measures have been developed to prevent emerging contaminants in water resources. This review provides a comprehensive overview of various treatment approaches for cosmetic wastewater, highlighting their limitations and the need for further research to fill the gaps in our knowledge.

Emerging organic compounds in European groundwater

S. Y. Bunting et al.

Summary: The emergence of organic compounds in European groundwater is a growing area of research. Despite the formalisation of a voluntary groundwater watch list, there has been no systematic review of groundwater occurrence data in Europe. The aim in Europe is to develop a unified strategy for the classification and prioritisation of organic compounds to be monitored in groundwater.
