Zinc oxide nanoparticles: Biosynthesis, characterization, biological activity and photocatalytic degradation for tartrazine yellow dye

Robson Dias Wouters et al.

Summary: The present study aimed to synthesize/characterize zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) for tartrazine yellow (TY) dye removal. ZnO-NPs were synthesized from Eucalyptus grandis extract. Various tests were conducted to characterize the ZnO-NPs. Results showed that ZnO-NPs had a rod-shaped structure and exhibited antimicrobial activity. The optimal conditions for TY photodegradation were determined, and ZnO-NPs demonstrated potential applications in wastewater treatment and nanomedicine.

Enhanced Wet Oxidation of Excess Sludge from Pharmaceutical Wastewater Treatment by NaOH

Yuting Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, the utilization of NaOH as an alkaline homogeneous catalyst for the enhanced wet oxidation of excess sludge from pharmaceutical wastewater was investigated. The highest VSS removal rate of 95.2% was achieved at 260°C within 60 minutes with an initial oxygen pressure of 1.0 MPa and NaOH concentration of 0.5 g·L-1. Simultaneously, a COD removal rate of 57.3% was obtained. The increase in VFAs indicated that NaOH greatly accelerated the degradation of sludge, while the production of acetic acid as an intermediate by-product also significantly increased, demonstrating the promising role of NaOH as a catalyst for the treatment of wastewater by utilizing wet oxidation liquid of excess sludge as a carbon source.
