Is rice-crayfish co-culture a better aquaculture model: From the perspective of antibiotic resistome profiles

Kang Ning et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the eco-friendliness of rice-crayfish co-culture compared to other aquaculture models in terms of antibiotic resistance profiles. Results showed that rice-crayfish co-culture model had significantly lower diversity of ARGs and lower potential risks when compared to other aquaculture models. Environmental factors such as nutrient and antibiotic concentrations played a role in shaping ARG patterns, but the effects of mobile genes and bacterial community were stronger in the proliferation and transmission of ARGs.

Logistic modeling to predict the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of olive leaf extract (OLE) against Listeria monocytogenes

Renjie Du et al.

Summary: This study utilizes logistic modeling to predict the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of olive leaf extract (OLE) against Listeria monocytogenes. The MIC value estimated through logistic modeling, called MIC-PDA, shows a potential to reduce the concentration and has been validated. The logistic modeling method is also verified by inhibition data of OLE against the growths of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella enteritidis, demonstrating its potential in the food industry as an antimicrobial.

Metagenomic insights into the profile of antibiotic resistomes in sediments of aquaculture wastewater treatment system

Jianfei Chen et al.

Summary: Our research revealed the profiles of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), their co-occurrence with mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and potential hosts in sediments of a crab pond wastewater purification system through metagenomic analysis. The residual antibiotics seemed to increase the propagation of ARGs in the crab pond, but no clear relationship was found between specific antibiotic types and corresponding resistance genes. Aquaculture had a lesser impact on sediment compared to other anthropogenic activities, but it increased the relative abundance of sulfonamide resistance genes. MGEs, especially plasmids, increased the risk of ARG dissemination. Various microorganisms were identified as hosts of ARGs, with Proteobacteria being the predominant hosts.

Impact of the surrounding environment on antibiotic resistance genes carried by microplastics in mangroves

Ruikun Sun et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the transmission risk of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) carried by microplastics (MPs) in mangroves. The results showed that mangrove MPs harbored pathogenic bacteria and the abundance of ARGs was higher in the living areas of the mangroves. Furthermore, the ARGs carried by MPs had the highest potential transmission risk through horizontal gene transfer.

The maturity period is the main stage of antibiotic resistance genes reduction in aerobic composting process of swine manure in sub-scale farms

Wei Guo et al.

Summary: The study found that the abundance of ARGs during swine manure composting is mainly influenced by potential host bacteria, and composting can reduce the abundance of potential host bacteria and pathogens, reducing environmental risks. Furthermore, prolonging the maturity period can inhibit the growth of potential host bacteria of ARGs, effectively inhibiting the transmission of ARGs.

Chlorine disinfection facilitates natural transformation through ROS-mediated oxidative stress

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study shows that chloramine and free chlorine can significantly increase the transformation rate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) through a series of cell responses, including increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), bacterial membrane and DNA damage, ultimately enhancing the transformation of ARGs. Disinfectant exposure induces a stress response in cells, leading to the promotion of ARGs transformation, which could play a crucial role in managing antibiotic resistance in water systems.

Mobile Genetic Elements Drive the Antibiotic Resistome Alteration in Freshwater Shrimp Aquaculture

Hao Fang et al.

Summary: Shrimp aquaculture environments harbor multiple antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) due to antibiotic overuse, with sediment samples showing higher levels of ARG biodiversity and abundance compared to water samples. Network analysis revealed complex co-occurrence patterns between bacterial communities and ARGs, with mobile genetic elements (MGEs) identified as the most crucial contributor (74.76%) to resistome alteration. This study sheds light on the intricate correlations among ARGs, bacterial diversity, and MGEs in freshwater shrimp aquaculture environments.
