Modelling of rainfall threshold for the initiation of landslides in lesser Himalayan region using THRESH

Suman Kumari et al.

Summary: Different parts of Himachal Pradesh in India are prone to landslide hazards due to the topography, tectonic activity, and climate. These hazards cause environmental and socio-economic losses, especially during the monsoon season. This study used the THRESH software to analyze rainfall thresholds for landslide events in the Lesser Himalayan Region. The analysis considered two rainfall thresholds, recent-antecedent and intensity duration, and validated the results with data from major landslide events in the area. The study found that rainfall exceeding the threshold values led to landslide initiation.

Exploring performance and robustness of shallow landslide susceptibility modeling at regional scale using different training and testing sets

Massimo Conforti et al.

Summary: This study examined the influence of random selection of training and testing sets on the predictive performance of shallow landslide susceptibility modeling at a regional scale. Four different methods, including frequency ratio, information value, logistic regression, and maximum entropy, were tested and compared. The results showed that all four methods achieved promising performance in predicting shallow landslide susceptibility, with maximum entropy performing the best. The accuracy of the models was found to be robust even when the training and testing sets were changed.

The 100-Year Series of Weather-Related Fatalities in the Czech Republic: Interactions of Climate, Environment, and Society

Rudolf Brazdil et al.

Summary: The paper examines weather-related fatalities in the Czech Republic from 1921 to 2020. A unique database was created from documentary evidence, providing information about the weather event, fatality, and related circumstances. The analysis revealed that frost, convective storms, floods, fog, snow and glaze ice, windstorms, and other inclement weather accounted for the fatalities, with winter and summer having the highest occurrence. Deaths were mainly caused by freezing to death/hypothermia or drowning, and hazardous behavior was more common among victims. The information on fatalities reflects historical milestones and changes in the country.

Three-Dimensional Discontinuous Deformation Analysis of Failure Mechanisms and Movement Characteristics of Slope Rockfalls

Ke Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the failure mechanisms and movement characteristics of rockfalls using a 3D DDA method, demonstrating its effectiveness in analyzing initial failure and post-movement characteristics. By simulating the initiation and failure of single boulders and large-scale rock masses, as well as studying the movement characteristics along slopes with different geometrical features, it reveals the significant advantages of 3D DDA in analyzing slope rockfall failure mechanisms.

Detection and forecasting of shallow landslides: lessons from a natural laboratory

Rupert Bainbridge et al.

Summary: This study analyzes and quantifies shallow landslides on a slope in Scotland, finding that abrupt changes in rainfall trend, characterized by high-intensity and long duration rainstorms, trigger these landslides. The study also proposes new rainfall thresholds for hazard alerts and demonstrates the use of low-cost sensors for real-time monitoring and notification of slope instability and landslides.

Experimental investigation on the dynamic mechanical properties and energy absorption mechanism of foam concrete

Ke Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic mechanical properties and energy absorption mechanism of foam concrete (FC) through laboratory tests and analyses. The results show that peak stresses in FC have a linear relationship with strain rate, while density affects the dynamic mechanical properties and fluctuations of FC. Energy absorption is primarily achieved through compaction and expansion of pores, with the smallest density yielding the highest energy absorption rate (EAR). Axial pre-stress can enhance the EAR of FC, but excessive pre-stress leads to energy release.

Merging Historical Archives with Remote Sensing Data: A Methodology to Improve Rockfall Mitigation Strategy for Small Communities

Davide Notti et al.

Summary: This work presents a methodology for assessing rockfall risk and creating a geodatabase of mitigation structures focused on small communities. Various techniques, such as digitization of archival sources, utilization of a historical landslide database, and UAV-LiDAR survey data, were employed to create a reliable and cost-effective state-of-the-art method. Additionally, a simple webGIS and a 3-D interactive view were developed to disseminate information about rockfall hazards and mitigation strategies.

Using Deep Learning to Formulate the Landslide Rainfall Threshold of the Potential Large-Scale Landslide

Jie-Lun Chiang et al.

Summary: The complex mechanism of landslides and their connection to climate change have made them critical events globally, affecting the long-term sustainable development of nations. Taiwan experiences numerous landslides every year and requires an effective warning system. This study uses a deep learning algorithm to predict landslide rainfall thresholds and assist decision makers in responding to landslides early and reducing the risk.

Triggering factors and critical thresholds for landslides in Rio de Janeiro-RJ, Brazil

M. Ehrlich et al.

Summary: This study compared landslide events in the city of Rio de Janeiro from 1998 to 2002 with those from 2010 to 2012, revealing a worsening condition in some regions despite slope stabilization efforts by GEO-RIO, likely due to increased irregular occupation (slums). Additionally, certain regions of the city were found to be more susceptible to landslides than others due to variations in rainfall, geology, geomorphology, and type of occupation. The early warning system for Rio de Janeiro should be improved by establishing zone-specific thresholds.

Jinjin Hou et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the trigger sensitivities of different daily hydrological variables using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool model, with results suggesting that historical hydrological variables play an important role in triggering landslides and debris flows. The prediction model showed a good performance in capturing most landslides and debris flows, with the temporal distribution of triggering events consistent with the annual precipitation distribution.

Recent Activity and Kinematics of the Bounding Faults of the Catanzaro Trough (Central Calabria, Italy): New Morphotectonic, Geodetic and Seismological Data

Claudia Pirrotta et al.

Summary: The Catanzaro Trough in central Calabria, Italy, is a complex area with a history of strong earthquakes. Multidisciplinary research has shown that the region is characterized by a poliphased Plio-Quaternary extensional basin with left-lateral strike-slip motion along the Lamezia-Catanzaro Fault System. The high seismic activity and historical earthquakes with magnitudes up to 6.9 suggest that this fault system may be responsible for triggering significant seismic events in the region.

Modeling Shallow Landslide Susceptibility and Assessment of the Relative Importance of Predisposing Factors, through a GIS-Based Statistical Analysis

Massimo Conforti et al.

Summary: This study evaluated shallow landslide susceptibility in the Mesima basin in Italy using geomorphological research and identified 18 predisposing factors. Results showed that slope gradient, TWI, soil texture, and lithology were the most important factors influencing shallow landslide susceptibility in the area. The logistic regression model generated a susceptibility map with five classes, showing that 26.1% of the study area had high or very high susceptibility to shallow landslides.
