Integrating phytoplankton pigment and DNA meta-barcoding observations to determine phytoplankton composition in the coastal ocean

Uncertainties of cell number estimation in cyanobacterial colonies and the potential use of sphere packing

Applicability and limitations of high-throughput algal growth rate measurements using invivo fluorescence in microtiter plates

Summary: Micro-algae play important roles in primary production, nutrient cycling, and applied biotechnology. Invivo chlorophyll-a fluorescence (IVCF) is a well-established proxy for the growth of micro-algae. In this study, the microtiter plate reader based IVCF (MPR-IVCF) approach was tested on strains of different algal phyla and found to work best for diatoms and cyanobacteria. However, the MPR-IVCF method may underestimate absolute growth rates in certain cases. Therefore, it is recommended for measuring absolute growth rates of diatoms and cyanobacteria and for comparing relative growth rates within and between species.

Estimating Biomass and Vitality of Microalgae for Monitoring Cultures: A Roadmap for Reliable Measurements

Species-specific responses of Antarctic terrestrial microalgae to salinity stress. Comparative study in Klebsormidium sp. and Stigeoclonium sp

Summary: The changes in PSII photochemical processes in Antarctic algae cells exposed to salinity stress were studied. The study found that salinity stress leads to a decrease in the potential and effective quantum yield of PSII electron transport. The vitality index of chlorophyll fluorescence also decreases under salinity stress. The analysis revealed that with increasing salt concentration, the chlorophyll fluorescence signals weaken, and the transient response becomes flattened, approaching zero values at a salt concentration of 3M NaCl. Klebsormidium sp. was found to be more resistant to salinity stress compared to Stigeoclonium sp.
