Insight into the adsorptive removal of ibuprofen using porous carbonaceous materials: A review

Ali Ayati et al.

Summary: In the past decade, the removal of pharmaceuticals from aquatic bodies has received significant attention. Ibuprofen (IBP), a commonly used anti-inflammatory drug, is released into the environment through pharmaceutical waste and wastewater. Adsorption technology using carbonaceous materials has been found to be highly effective in reducing IBP in low concentrations. This comprehensive review examines the use of various carbonaceous adsorbents for IBP removal, including activated carbon, biochar, graphene-based materials, and carbon nanostructures. The studies compiled in this review indicate that some carbon-based adsorbents have higher IBP uptake than commercial activated carbons. More attention is needed for practical application and scaling up of these research findings to support water resource management and sustainability.

Advanced adsorbents for ibuprofen removal from aquatic environments: a review

Ahmed I. Osman et al.

Summary: This article reviews advanced adsorption methods to remove pharmaceuticals from the environment, focusing on ibuprofen's occurrence, toxicity, adsorbents, kinetics, and adsorption isotherms. Carbon-based adsorbents show the highest adsorption capacity for ibuprofen, with activated carbon at 10.8-408 mg/g and biochar at 2.5-1033 mg/g. Metal-organic frameworks are also promising due to their high surface area and tunable properties and morphology.

Nanosized metal-organic frameworks as unique platforms for bioapplications

Manuela Cedrun-Morales et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are versatile materials that create highly porous and reactive platforms. When produced at the nanoscale, they can be combined with inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) to create nanocomposites (NCs) with unique features. These NCs can be remotely controlled and catalyze abiotic reactions in living cells, making them potential tools for advanced therapies.

Magnetic-watermelon rinds biochar for uranium-contaminated water treatment using an electromagnetic semi-batch column with removal mechanistic investigations

Lakshmi Prasanna Lingamdinne et al.

Summary: Utilizing magnetized biochar derived from waste watermelon rind for the removal of uranium contaminants in water has shown enhanced adsorption capacity, stability, and reusability. The surface characteristics of magnetized watermelon rind biochar (MWBC) outperformed other sourced biochars, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 323.56 mg/g at pH 4.0 and 293 K. The presence of Fe oxide in MWBC significantly increased ion exchange and complexation action capacity, making it an effective and cost-efficient solution for U(VI) removal from aqueous solutions.

Luciana Resende Marcelo et al.

Summary: Iron-based magnetic nanomaterials are promising adsorbents for pollutant removal in water and wastewater treatment, focusing on toxic elements, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides. Common methods for synthesis include coprecipitation, solvothermal, and hydrothermal methods, with magnetite being the most commonly used magnetic nanoparticle. The adsorption process follows Langmuir isothermal model and kinetic patterns are described by pseudo-second-order equations, showing promising performances for pollutant removal.

The effect of pyrolysis temperature and feedstock on date palm waste derived biochar to remove single and multi-metals in aqueous solutions

Banu Sizirici et al.

Summary: The study found that biochar derived from date palm leaf and frond waste showed high efficiency and sorption capacity in removing single and mixed metals from water. Different feedstock and pyrolysis temperatures did not significantly affect the metal removal efficiency of biochar, indicating that producing biochar at lower temperatures could be a sustainable and cost-effective option without compromising its effectiveness in metal removal.

Kinetics of fluoride adsorption onto native and Mg(OH)2-amended limestone

Noura AL-Darwish et al.

Summary: The adsorption kinetics of fluoride onto limestone and Mg(OH)(2)-amended limestone were investigated, showing substantial increases in F- adsorption with the amended limestone. It is hypothesized that the similarity in ionic radii and charge of F- and OH- is the major cause of these increases. The results suggest that Mg(OH)(2)-amended limestone could be an environmentally safe and economical option for fluoride removal.
