Factors affecting seasonal variation of microbial community structure in Hulun Lake, China

Yongquan Shang et al.

Summary: This study explored the microbial community and its influencing factors in Hulun Lake water during different seasons using high-throughput sequencing. The results showed significant seasonal differences in the distribution of important phyla and alpha diversity of microorganisms. Changes in environmental variables were correlated with changes in the microbial community, with temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen potentially major factors influencing seasonal bacterial diversity trends.

Spatiotemporal variability and diffusive emissions of greenhouse gas in a shallow eutrophic lake in Inner Mongolia, China

Guohua Li et al.

Summary: Shallow lakes in mid-latitude arid areas with cold winters, such as Lake Wuliangsuhai in Inner Mongolia, can be significant sources of greenhouse gases. The study found high spatial and temporal variation in dissolved CO2, CH4, and N2O concentrations, and higher concentrations and fluxes in the north part of the lake. The location of study sites relative to the main inflow and the abundance of submerged macrophytes were identified as the main controlling factors of greenhouse gas concentrations.

Assessment andmanagement of lake eutrophication: A case study in Lake Erhai, China

Song-Shun Lin et al.

Summary: This study summarizes the sources and mechanisms that trigger eutrophication in lakes, and discusses effective tools for evaluating the degree of eutrophication. Using Lake Erhai as a case study, it was found in a mesotrophic state with N and P co-limitation before 2006, and only P limitation since then. Effective measures for maintaining sustainable development in the watershed and a framework for an early warning system utilizing GIS and RS technologies for preventing eutrophication are proposed.

A review of research progress of heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification microorganisms (HNADMs)

Tao Song et al.

Summary: Traditional nitrogen removal methods rely on autotrophic nitrification and anaerobic denitrification, but heterotrophic nitrification & aerobic denitrification microorganisms (HNADMs) have the potential to simultaneously achieve nitrification, denitrification, and even phosphorus removal. This suggests that HNADMs could be a valuable tool for wastewater pollution removal.

Habitat heterogeneity induces regional differences in sediment nitrogen fixation in eutrophic freshwater lake

Linqi Tian et al.

Summary: This study investigated nitrogen fixation rates and diazotroph diversities in sediments with different ecological status in a eutrophic lake. Results showed higher nitrogenase activity and nifH abundance in sediments of blooms area than vegetation-dominated habitats. Habitant heterogeneity shaped different succession of biological nitrogen fixation in sediments.

Eutrophication decreased CO2 but increased CH4 emissions from lake: A case study of a shallow Lake Ulansuhai

Heyang Sun et al.

Summary: The study conducted in Lake Ulansuhai, a shallow eutrophic lake in Northern China, found that eutrophication significantly decreased CO2 emissions from the lake, while increasing CH4 emissions, resulting in a CH4 and CO2 emission ratio of approximately 2 in terms of global warming potential.

Radiation of nitrogen-metabolizing enzymes across the tree of life tracks environmental transitions in Earth history

Chris Parsons et al.

Summary: Nitrogen is essential for life and plays a significant role in global biological productivity. The study investigated the evolution of nitrogen-cycling metabolisms on early Earth by analyzing gene and species trees, revealing key events such as gene birth and horizontal transfer. The findings provide new insights into the timing of metabolisms proliferation and its relation to oxygen levels and nitrogen availability in the early Earth.
