Antifungal activity and metabolomics analysis of Piper sarmentosum extracts against Fusarium graminearum

Luli Zhou et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the antifungal activity and untargeted metabolomics analysis of Piper sarmentosum extract (PSE) against Fusarium graminearum. The results showed that PSE inhibits the growth of F. graminearum and may contain multiple antifungal markers. Metabolomics analysis revealed that PSE can significantly increase the levels of guanosine, guanine, adenosine, and L-isoleucine in fungi.

Two types of O-methyltransferase are involved in biosynthesis of anticancer methoxylated 4′-deoxyflavones in Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi

Meng-Ying Cui et al.

Summary: The study found that methoxylated flavones have strong ability to induce apoptosis and enhance bioactivity, with methoxylation not causing side effects on healthy cells. Both type I and type II OMT enzymes are involved in the biosynthesis of methoxylated flavones in S. baicalensis.

Identification of purine biosynthesis as an NADH-sensing pathway to mediate energy stress

Ronghui Yang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the pathophysiological role of deregulated purine biosynthesis in NADH accumulation-associated disorders and demonstrates the utility of manipulating NADH/NAD(+) and NADPH/NADP(+) using genetic tools. The authors develop a genetic tool to manipulate the ratios of cellular NADH/NAD(+) and NADPH/NADP(+), and identify purine biosynthesis as an NADH-sensing pathway to mediate reductive stress.

Oroxylin A: A Promising Flavonoid for Prevention and Treatment of Chronic Diseases

Anjana Sajeev et al.

Summary: There has been significant progress in the understanding of molecular mechanisms of chronic diseases, but they still remain a leading cause of death globally. Most approved medications for these diseases target only a single gene/protein/pathway and have severe side effects with limited efficacy. Natural compounds, such as Oroxylin A, have shown great potential in curbing various disastrous and fatal diseases. Oroxylin A modulates important signaling pathways and molecules involved in the molecular mechanism of chronic diseases, making it an interesting compound for research. Preclinical and clinical studies have also shown promising potential of Oroxylin A in treating cancer, cardiovascular diseases, inflammation, and other chronic diseases.

Chemical composition and anti-inflammatory activity of n-butanol extract of Piper sarmentosum Roxb. In the intestinal porcine epithelial cells (IPEC-J2)

Dingfa Wang et al.

Summary: The study identified alkaloids and phenolics as the main constituents in n-butanol extract of Piper sarmentosum Roxb. This extract exerted anti-inflammatory effects by regulating the NF-kappa B signaling pathway and methionine metabolism, reducing inflammatory responses induced by lipopolysaccharide in IPEC-J2 cells.

Summary: In this study, a ZEN hapten was designed and prepared to detect the mycotoxin ZEN, and ic-ELISA and multicolor ELISA were established for ZEN toxin detection. The ic-ELISA showed a high sensitivity of 0.85 μg/L for ZEN detection, while the multicolor ELISA could detect ZEN concentration as low as 0.1 μg/L with the naked eye. This study provided an effective analysis strategy for the rapid screening and accurate monitoring of ZEN contaminant in foods.

Summary: In this study, UPLCMS/MS was used to analyze the metabolites of PS and PC, revealing differential metabolite distribution in leaves, stems, and roots. Leaves of PS and PC were found to be rich in alkaloids and phenols, exhibiting distinct differences from stems and roots. Metabolic pathway analysis indicated that metabolites of PS and PC were involved in multiple pathways and played crucial roles in important biosynthetic processes.
