Climate Impacts of Convective Cloud Microphysics in NCAR CAM5

Lin Lin et al.

Summary: We improved the treatments of convective cloud microphysics in the NCAR Community Atmosphere Model version 5.3 (CAM5.3) by implementing new parameterizations for convective ice and snow particles' terminal velocities, adding graupel microphysics, considering convective snow detrainment, and enhancing rain initiation and generation rate in warm clouds. The impacts of the improved microphysics on simulated global climate were evaluated, with a focus on cloud radiative forcing, graupel microphysics, convective cloud ice amount, and tropical precipitation. The results showed that the enhancements in rain initiation and generation rate alleviated the excessive cloud shortwave radiative forcing over the tropics and midlatitudes, bringing the simulations in better agreement with the observations. The addition of graupel microphysics and the accompanying increase in hydrometeor fall speed played a crucial role in alleviating the overestimation of convective ice mass.

Summary: This study successfully retrieved tropospheric ozone (O3) profiles from MAX-DOAS measurements in Beijing by fusing data from multiple sources. The results showed good agreement with independent measurements at the surface and at elevated altitudes. However, limitations in the measurement technique made it difficult to reproduce the vertical distribution and steep gradients in the upper troposphere.

Assessment of HCHO in Beijing during 2009 to 2020 using satellite observation and numerical model: Spatial characteristic and impact factor

Jiachen Fan et al.

Summary: This study used satellite observations and modeling to analyze the spatiotemporal variations of tropospheric formaldehyde (HCHO) in Beijing from 2009 to 2020 and examine the factors influencing its variation. The results showed that eastern Beijing had higher HCHO concentrations, peaking in 2018. HCHO exhibited a good response to ozone (O3), with higher HCHO and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) photolysis leading to O3 increase in summer, while decreasing HCHO and increasing NO2 inhibited O3 formation in winter. Transportation emissions were the largest contributor to HCHO, followed by the industrial sector, and residential sources had long-term effects. Isoprene produced by plants was one of the main sources of HCHO, and meteorological conditions influenced its production efficiency. This study revealed the potential accumulation of HCHO in cities and highlighted the dominant role of anthropogenic emissions, while also emphasizing the influence of natural factors and regional transport.

Vertical characteristics and potential sources of aerosols over northeast China using ground-based MAX-DOAS

Changyuan Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, MAX-DOAS was used to analyze the vertical distribution of air pollutants in Shenyang throughout the year. The results showed that winter had the highest aerosol extinction coefficient, followed by summer, spring, and autumn. The weather type influenced the aerosol extinction coefficients in different seasons, with summer experiencing high concentrations due to hygroscopic growth of small particles. There was evidence of aerosol transport from Inner Mongolia to Liaoning Province in summer. Beijing, Tianjin, and neighboring Hebei Province were identified as the main sources of pollution in Shenyang.

Secondary PM2.5 dominates aerosol pollution in the Yangtze River Delta region: Environmental and health effects of the Clean air Plan

Nan Li et al.

Summary: The study used the WRF-Chem model to simulate PM2.5 in the Yangtze River Delta region of China in 2017 and evaluated the air quality improvement and associated health burden in the final year of the Clean Air Plan. The results showed that the plan effectively reduced PM2.5 pollution levels by around 30%. The primary PM2.5 showed a more significant decreasing trend than the secondary PM2.5, mainly due to the clear air actions and worsening ozone pollution. The study emphasized the benefits of the Clean Air Plan and suggested focusing on controlling secondary pollutants for further PM2.5 improvement.

Impacts of haze and nitrogen oxide alleviation on summertime ozone formation: A modeling study over the Yangtze River Delta, China

Tian Feng et al.

Summary: The strict emission control measures in the Yangtze River Delta region have significantly impacted air pollution. However, the effects of reducing PM2.5 and NOx on summer O3 formation are still controversial. Simulation results show that NOx mitigation has changed daytime O3 formation, but the decrease in O3 due to NOx is counteracted by haze alleviation. It is important to take more efforts to achieve lower O3 levels.

Decoupling in the vertical shape of HCHO during a sea breeze event: The effect on trace gas satellite retrievals and column-to-surface translation

Amir H. Souri et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of sea breeze circulation on the vertical stratification of formaldehyde (HCHO) concentrations using a regional atmospheric chemical transport model for three stagnant days in June 2018 on the east coast of the U.S. The results show that the thermal contrast between the Atlantic Ocean and terrestrial regions leads to monsoon-like flow, carrying clean marine air masses over the land. In contrast, polluted air masses prevail in higher altitudes. The decoupling pattern of HCHO concentrations with altitude and its negative correlation with surface concentrations are evident. The study highlights the importance of accurate representation of sea-land breezes in atmospheric models for reliable satellite-derived trace gas retrievals and air quality applications. Rating: 7 out of 10.

Maritime and coastal observations of ambient PM2.5 and its elemental compositions in the Bohai Bay of China during spring and summer: Levels, spatial distribution and source apportionment

Xiaoyang Yang et al.

Summary: This study conducted ship-based observations to measure PM2.5 concentrations and PM2.5-bound trace elements (TEs) in China's Bohai Bay. Results showed that while PM2.5 concentrations were lower offshore, average TEs concentrations were higher, indicating differences in emission sources. The top six elements found in PM2.5 were consistent in both areas. Ship emissions were identified as the primary contributor of TEs, with higher levels of Ni and V in this study region compared to coastal cities of developed countries. Eight sources of TEs were identified, and coastal and offshore pollution emissions had significant impacts on the study region.

Summary: Previous studies have examined the influence of regional transport on aerosol pollution using numerical simulation or surface observation. However, vertical observations are necessary to fully understand regional transport due to the uneven vertical distribution of air pollutants. In this study, we used ground-based multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) to obtain the vertical profiles of aerosol and its precursors in suburban Beijing. We found that southwest-northeast transport had maximum net transport fluxes in the 200-300 m, 100-200 m, 500-600 m, and 500-600 m layers for aerosol extinction coefficient (AEC), NO2, SO2, and HCHO, respectively.
