Response of ecosystem services in Beijing-Tianjin Sandstorm Source Control Project to differing engineering measures scenarios

Xiaoyu Xing et al.

Summary: Changed land use patterns, influenced by ecological engineering governance measures, have significant impacts on ecosystem services and ecosystem service value. In this study, four ecosystem services were quantified in the Beijing-Tianjin Sandstorm Source Control Project area, and the effects of different land use change scenarios on ecosystem services and value were simulated. The results showed that protective governance measures had a greater role in improving ecosystem services compared to restoration governance. Strengthening the emphasis on protecting governance outcomes is necessary for future ecological engineering projects.

Analysis of Spatial-Temporal Differentiation and Influencing Factors of Ecosystem Services in Resource-Based Cities in Semiarid Regions

Shichao Zhu et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the temporal and spatial differentiation characteristics of ecosystem service values (ESV) in semiarid regions through an improved ESV evaluation model. The results show that ESV changes tend to be stable but with intensified spatial differentiation in Baotou City. Precipitation is the dominant factor increasing ESV, while temperature has a significant negative impact on the low-ESV area. Higher land use integrity accelerates the decline of ESV in the surrounding areas of built-up areas. This research provides new insights for the ecological restoration zoning and sustainable development of resource-based cities.

Urbanisation and ecosystem services in the Taiwan Strait west coast urban agglomeration, China, from the perspective of an interactive coercive relationship

Ting Zhou et al.

Summary: Rapid urbanization has led to urban diseases that interfere with the sustainability of ecosystem services (ESs). Understanding the interactions between urbanization and ESs is important for improving urban development quality and optimizing ESs. In this study, we assessed the relationship between urbanization and ESs in the Taiwan Strait west coast urban agglomeration using land-use remote sensing data. The results showed an overall increase in urbanization level and a gradual decline in ecosystem services value. The coordinated relationship between urbanization and ESs was positive, but lagging ecosystem services were observed. The decoupling state between urbanization and ESV varied, with weak decoupling increasing over time. Coordinated development was rare in the study region. This study provides an empirical basis for improving the coordinated development of urbanization and ecosystem services in the Taiwan Strait west coast urban agglomeration.

Alysha van Duynhoven et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of neighborhood size on the capability of deep learning models to forecast land cover changes and examines the effect of auxiliary spatial variables on the model's capacity. The findings suggest that increasing the neighborhood size improves the model's ability to predict short-term land cover changes. CNN-TCN models perform the best in forecasting land cover changes for several regions when additional spatial variables are provided.

A policy framework to accommodate both the analytical and normative aspects of biodiversity in ecological compensation

Anne-Charlotte Vaissiere et al.

Summary: Ecological compensation is a principle that calls for compensating negative impacts on biodiversity, with biodiversity offsetting requiring quantified gains to compensate quantified losses. Policies reducing ecological compensation to biodiversity offsetting overlook the analytical and normative aspects of biodiversity. Reconciling these two aspects is key to a serious ecological compensation policy.
