Contrasting Dynamics of Littoral and Riparian Reed Stands within a Wetland Complex of Lake Cerknica

Nik Ojdanic et al.

Summary: This article discusses the effects of environmental parameters on the common reed in an intermittent wetland in Slovenia using field measurements and remotely sensed data. A normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time series was created from 2017 to 2021 and fitted to a unimodal growth model to determine different stages of reed growth. Intense floods during culm growth hindered reed production, while dry periods and temperatures before growth began were helpful. Water level fluctuations had a greater effect on reeds at the littoral site compared to the riparian site. These findings are useful for common reed management at the intermittent lake Cerknica.

Sentinel-1 based Inland water dynamics Mapping System (SIMS)

Manu K. Soman et al.

Summary: This work introduces SIMS, an open-source web application that uses Sentinel-1 radar imagery to enable automated mapping of inland water dynamics. SIMS is built using Python and Google Earth Engine, and employs a simple binary thresholding technique and an outlier removal method to accurately handle complex flow regimes. The system can export numerical data or time-series shapefiles representing the variation of inland water extents. The study evaluates classification metrics using validation sites and indicates high overall accuracy for lakes and rivers.

Surface Water Dynamics from Space: A Round Robin Intercomparison of Using Optical and SAR High-Resolution Satellite Observations for Regional Surface Water Detection

Christian Tottrup et al.

Summary: Climate change, increasing population, and changes in land use have driven the need for better understanding of surface water dynamics. The availability of environmental data from satellite systems is recognized as an essential tool for water resource monitoring. This study compared 14 different satellite-based approaches and found that a dual sensor approach combining optical and radar satellites is the most effective for large-scale surface water mapping.

Water Body Mapping Using Long Time Series Sentinel-1 SAR Data in Poyang Lake

Guozhuang Shen et al.

Summary: This study utilizes Sentinel-1 SAR data and the WaterUNet algorithm to accurately monitor the water bodies of Poyang Lake. The results show a strong correlation between water area and water level, which can be used to estimate the water area or water level of Poyang Lake.
