LiDAR Point Clouds Usage for Mapping the Vegetation Cover of the Fryderyk Mine Repository

Marta Szostak et al.

Summary: The paper examines the use of LiDAR data for automating the mapping of vegetation and evaluating the ecological succession process. The study focuses on the Fryderyk mine in southern Poland, where a forest succession has occurred for several decades. Airborne laser scanning (ALS) point clouds were used to obtain detailed information on the morphology of the spoil heap and the secondary forest succession process, particularly vegetation parameters such as height and canopy cover. The analysis of ALS point clouds confirmed the progression of the forest succession process and land cover changes, especially in wooded or bushed areas. Precise vegetation parameters were calculated, showing changes in vegetation height, canopy cover, and volume over time.

Direct Georeferencing UAV-SfM in High-Relief Topography: Accuracy Assessment and Alternative Ground Control Strategies along Steep Inaccessible Rock Slopes

Paul Ryan Nesbit et al.

Summary: Steep rock slopes provide opportunities and challenges in Earth science applications. Direct georeferencing of UAVs can generate high-resolution 3D datasets, but large vertical errors may occur in near-vertical terrains. Multiple image angles result in the highest precision, while ground control points greatly reduce mean errors.

Summary: This study evaluates the influence of image angle, overlaps, and flight type on the accuracy of dense 3D point clouds generated by UAV-SfM in terrains with complex geometry and steep slopes. The results suggest that utilizing off-nadir imagery, specific overlaps, and flight at a fixed height above ground level can lead to optimal accuracy and precision in UAV-SfM.

On the 3D Reconstruction of Coastal Structures by Unmanned Aerial Systems with Onboard Global Navigation Satellite System and Real-Time Kinematics and Terrestrial Laser Scanning

Diogo Goncalves et al.

Summary: This study compares the effectiveness of an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) and a Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) in reconstructing a rocky groin. The Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetry technique applied on drone images proved to be the most suitable method for reconstructing the rocky groin, as it was faster and generated a Digital Surface Model (DSM) without data gaps. UAS remote sensing technique can be considered as a valid alternative for monitoring coastal structures, improving damage inspection, and supporting management.

Summary: This study investigates the Roccacaramanico Conglomerate (RCC) in the central Apennines, which is a calcareousclastic mega-bed within the Late Messinian-Early Pliocene pelitic succession. By using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technologies and digital mapping, a multi-methodology survey technique was applied to reconstruct the 3D digital outcrop model of the RCC and analyze the fractures and their time-space relationships. The results provide insights into the tectonic evolution of the area and demonstrate the reliability of remote survey techniques compared to direct measurements. Two alternative working methods are proposed for different applications.

Improvements to airborne laser scanning data filtering in sandstone landscapes

M. Tomkova et al.

Summary: Sandstone rock outcrops in Central Europe are unique and mostly covered by vegetation, making it challenging to distinguish between ground and non-ground points. This study proposes three filtering methods, namely spatially conditioned filtering, object-oriented classification, and filtering with additional terrain data, to overcome this challenge. The object-oriented classification method achieved good results in distinguishing between rock pillars and trees in rock cities.
