Woody Plant Encroachment: Evaluating Methodologies for Semiarid Woody Species Classification from Drone Images

Horia G. Olariu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the ability of very high resolution drone imagery to accurately map woody plant species encroaching on semiarid grasslands. The findings showed that drone imagery can provide highly accurate classifications of woody plant species, surpassing the results achieved by aerial and drone imagery using hyperspectral sensors in more diverse landscapes.

Estimating Rangeland Fine Fuel Biomass in Western Texas Using High-Resolution Aerial Imagery and Machine Learning

Zheng Li et al.

Summary: This study successfully classified and predicted fuel types and fine fuel biomass in rangelands of west Texas using high spatial resolution images and random forest algorithm. The results showed that fuel type and vegetation index were significant factors influencing fine fuel biomass, and the addition of texture indices improved the accuracy of the models. Upscaling analysis with medium spatial resolution imagery explained approximately 60% of the biomass variance. These findings highlight the potential of high spatial resolution images in effectively estimating rangeland fuel types and fine fuel biomass, which is important for rangeland monitoring and fire management.

Reconstructing Past Global Vegetation With Random Forest Machine Learning, Sacrificing the Dynamic Response for Robust Results

Amelie Lindgren et al.

Summary: This study introduces a simple but robust method to create global vegetation patterns using artificial intelligence. The method is able to construct robust vegetation maps despite uncertainties in the climate forcing, but requires more evidence to reconstruct vegetation for the last ice age.

Sentinel-2 Satellite Imagery for Urban Land Cover Classification by Optimized Random Forest Classifier

Tianxiang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a systematic method to automatically tune the hyperparameters of a random forest classifier by Bayesian parameter optimization, and utilizes Sentinel-2A/B satellite imagery for land cover classification in Beijing. The experimental results demonstrate that the optimized random forest classifier outperforms traditional support vector machines and random forests with default hyperparameters in terms of accuracy, precision, and recall.

A unified vegetation index for quantifying the terrestrial biosphere

Gustau Camps-Valls et al.

Summary: This study generalized commonly used vegetation indices by exploiting higher-order relations between spectral channels, resulting in increased sensitivity to vegetation physiological and biophysical parameters. The nonlinear NDVI consistently improved accuracy in monitoring key parameters, suggesting potential for more precise measurements of terrestrial carbon dynamics.

Using UAV Imagery to Detect and Map Woody Species Encroachment in a Subalpine Grassland: Advantages and Limits

Ludovica Oddi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate the potential of using high-resolution UAV imagery to monitor the early development of woody species encroachment and compare the performance of manual and semi-automatic classification methods. Results showed that manual photo-interpretation was the most accurate method, followed by the pixel-based approach, which was faster than manual and more accurate than the object-based method.
