Assessing spatiotemporal variations of AOD in Japan based on Himawari-8 L3 V31 aerosol products: Validations and applications

Yunhui Tan et al.

Summary: The high temporal resolution of the Himawari-8 satellite allows for real-time monitoring of aerosol optical depths (AOD). This study evaluated the accuracy of the newly released Himawari-8 Level 3 Version 31 aerosol products in Japan using ground observations. The results showed that the AOD_Merged product had the best performance in tracking the spatial and temporal variations of AOD in Japan.

Vertical profiles of the transport fluxes of aerosol and its precursors between Beijing and its southwest cities

Qihou Hu et al.

Summary: Previous studies have examined the influence of regional transport on aerosol pollution using numerical simulation or surface observation. However, vertical observations are necessary to fully understand regional transport due to the uneven vertical distribution of air pollutants. In this study, we used ground-based multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) to obtain the vertical profiles of aerosol and its precursors in suburban Beijing. We found that southwest-northeast transport had maximum net transport fluxes in the 200-300 m, 100-200 m, 500-600 m, and 500-600 m layers for aerosol extinction coefficient (AEC), NO2, SO2, and HCHO, respectively.

Estimation of hourly full-coverage PM2.5 concentrations at 1-km resolution in China using a two-stage random forest model

Tingting Jiang et al.

Summary: The study estimated hourly PM2.5 concentrations in China from March 2018 to February 2019 at a 1-km spatial resolution using a two-stage random forest model. The model achieved accurate and robust estimations of PM2.5 concentrations, but the performance varied across different seasons.

Can deep learning beat numerical weather prediction?

M. G. Schultz et al.

Summary: The recent hype around artificial intelligence has renewed interest in applying successful deep learning methods in the field of meteorology. Evidence suggests that better weather forecasts can be achieved with the introduction of big data mining and neural networks. However, fundamental breakthroughs are needed before numerical weather models can be completely replaced by DL approaches.

Light absorption of black carbon and brown carbon in winter in North China Plain: comparisons between urban and rural sites

Jiaxing Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the light absorption enhancement of black carbon due to coated materials in urban and rural areas of North China Plain in winter 2019, finding that the rural site had slightly higher average E-abs compared to the urban site. The dependence of E-abs on coating materials was limited, but showed significant increases at lower relative humidity levels.

Quantifying Contributions of Local Emissions and Regional Transport to NOX in Beijing Using TROPOMI Constrained WRF-Chem Simulation

Yizhi Zhu et al.

Summary: The study finds that bottom-up NOx emissions in BJ were overestimated, along with overestimation of NOx input from other cities. The adjusted inventory simulation showed higher spatial agreement and reduced average relative error by 45%. The top-down inventory indicated that city boundary transport contributes approximately 40% of the NOX concentration in BJ, and in 2019, NOx emissions and transport in BJ decreased by 20.4% and 17.2%, respectively, compared to 2018.

Estimating PM2.5 concentrations via random forest method using satellite, auxiliary, and ground-level station dataset at multiple temporal scales across China in 2017

Bin Guo et al.

Summary: The RF model calibrated PM2.5 concentrations at a 1 km resolution scale across China in 2017 using ground-level monitoring data, AOD, meteorological data, and auxiliary data. Validation using three ten-folded cross-validation methods and different temporal scales showed good performance, with the RF model outperforming most statistical regression models for calibrating PM2.5 concentrations. The findings provide an important dataset for epidemiological and air pollutants exposure risk studies in China.
