Response of ecosystem services to impervious surface changes and their scaling effects in Loess Plateau ecological Screen, China

Yiming Zhang et al.

Summary: The complexity and fragility of the Yellow River Basin ecosystem limit its economic growth and sustainable social development. In response, the Chinese government has established the Loess Plateau Ecological Screen to mitigate the negative ecological impacts. However, there is a lack of studies that quantify the effects of impervious surfaces on ecosystem services. This study explores the response of ecosystem services to changes in impervious surfaces and investigates the scale effect from 2000 to 2020.

Plant Allometric Growth Enhanced by the Change in Soil Stoichiometric Characteristics With Depth in an Alpine Meadow Under Climate Warming

Manhou Xu et al.

Summary: Global warming has affected the climate of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, leading to changes in plant growth and soil nutrients in alpine meadows. This study conducted an 8-year warming experiment and found that warming promoted allometric growth in the aboveground part of the vegetation and strengthened allometric growth in the belowground part. Additionally, soil stoichiometry changed with warming, with higher carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus content at deeper soil depths. The study concluded that the change in soil stoichiometry promoted plant allometric growth in response to climate warming.

Summary: This study evaluated the spatial and temporal changes of three ecosystem services (water yield, soil conservation, and carbon storage) in Hainan Province, and analyzed the spatial heterogeneity of the influencing factors. The results showed that the ecosystem services were relatively weak at lower elevations, there were obvious hot spots and cold spots in water yield and soil conservation, and different land use types had different impacts on ecosystem services. Precipitation, normalized difference vegetation index, and elevation factors had significant effects on ecosystem services.
