Heat flux in volcanic and geothermal areas: Methods, principles, applications and future directions

Yingchun Wang et al.

Summary: The measurement and assessment of heat flux in volcanic and geothermal areas are crucial to studying thermodynamic processes, locating geothermal activity, evaluating resources, and assessing volcanic hazards. This article reviews various methods for heat flux measurement, discusses their principles and application, and explores the relationship between these methods and heat transfer mechanisms. The soil temperature gradient and soil CO2 flux methods are suggested as promising heat flux measurement methods. Furthermore, the results of these measurements can be beneficial for targeting geothermal resources and understanding heat and mass transfer mechanisms.

Ground Surface Temperature History Since the Last Glacial Maximum in Northeast Asia: Reconstructions From the Borehole Geotherms of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program

Guangzheng Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the inversion of past ground surface temperature changes using borehole temperature measurements. The results show that there has been a rise of approximately 2K since 0.1-0.6 thousand years before present (BP) and a rise of approximately 10K since 20 thousand years BP. The findings emphasize the importance of borehole heat-flow profiles as a record of climate changes and the need for climate correction in heat-flow determinations.

Detecting geothermal anomalies using Landsat 8 thermal infrared remote sensing data in the Ruili Basin, Southwest China

Jiangqin Chao et al.

Summary: This study used winter land surface temperature (LST) time series data derived from thermal infrared remote sensing to identify geothermal anomaly areas in the Ruili Basin. By excluding the heat island effect and using drilling data, the infrared remote sensing method proved to be effective in detecting LST anomalies and has significance in regional geothermal prospecting.

Thermal structure beneath Changbaishan Volcano, northeastern Asia: new insights from temperature logging and numerical modelling

Guangzheng Jiang et al.

Summary: The Changbaishan Volcano is a hazardous active volcanic field in northeastern Asia, and its unrest from 2002 to 2006 has raised concerns. This study investigates the thermal structure of the lithosphere using geothermal measurements and numerical modeling. The results reveal a remarkably high heat flow near the Tianchi caldera and a gradual decrease as the distance from the caldera increases. A 3D transient heat simulation suggests the presence of an ellipsoidal magma chamber beneath the Tianchi caldera, supplied with magma from the asthenosphere for 2 million years. These findings indicate ongoing magma activity and the potential for volcanic reactivation in the Changbaishan Volcano, emphasizing the need for further research on the lithospheric thermal structure to understand associated volcanic hazards.

Geochemical evidence for the nonexistence of supercritical geothermal fluids at the Yangbajing geothermal field, southern Tibet

Yingchun Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the origin of geothermal water in the Yangbajing geothermal field, as well as the sources of CO2 and He in the field. The research identifies three different reservoirs with varying temperatures and determines that the geological conditions of the Yangbajing geothermal field are not conducive for supercritical fluids, unlike other geothermal fields worldwide. These findings are significant for exploring and developing high-temperature geothermal resources in China.

Detection of geothermal anomalies in the Northern Lake Abaya geothermal field, Main Ethiopian Rift

Tsion Taye Weldeyohannes et al.

Summary: The detection of geothermal anomalies using TIR remote sensing data is challenging due to the influence of sensor specifications and physical parameters on LST retrieval and analysis. This study utilized multi-temporal TIR data to detect geothermal areas in the southern Main Ethiopian Rift and found that the LST of areas with geothermal potential remains relatively constant on a yearly basis.
