Quantification of the uncertainty in multiscale validation of coarse-resolution satellite albedo products: A study based on airborne CASI data

Xiaodan Wu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the uncertainty factors and established the quantification method for measuring the uncertainty in multiscale validation. The uncertainty mainly comes from errors in high-resolution albedo maps, errors generated in the upscaling process, and errors caused by geolocation mismatch. These factors are uncorrelated and linearly propagated into the final uncertainty results. The errors caused by geolocation mismatch are significant and exceed the accuracy requirement for satellite albedo products. The study emphasizes the importance of using fine subpixel sizes for more reliable validation results.

Evaluation of SNPP and NOAA-20 VIIRS Datasets Using RadCalNet and Landsat 8/OLI Data

Xin Jing et al.

Summary: In this study, the radiometric accuracy and stability of SNPP/VIIRS and NOAA-20/VIIRS data were verified using RVUS data as a benchmark. The efficiency of the SNPP/VIIRS reprocessing algorithm was also evaluated. Additionally, Landsat 8/OLI was used to validate the accuracy and stability of VIIRS data. The results showed that the radiometric biases of most SNPP/VIIRS bands were within acceptable limits, and the reprocessing algorithm effectively improved the radiometric accuracy and stability of the SNPP/VIIRS dataset.

Upscaling Evapotranspiration from a Single-Site to Satellite Pixel Scale

Xiang Li et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a comprehensive framework to obtain ground truth ET at the satellite pixel scale, addressing the spatial-scale mismatch issue between site observations and remote sensing estimations. Results showed the superiority of ET_EC over homogeneous underlying surfaces and the better performance of the GPR method over moderately and highly heterogeneous underlying surfaces. An integrated method was proposed to obtain ground truth ET over typical underlying surfaces, with a quantitatively evaluated uncertainty of 0.02-0.41 mm/d. This upscaling framework has the potential to be applied globally for remotely sensed ET products' validation.

Evaluation of vicarious calibration for airborne sensors using RadCalNet

Brian N. Wenny et al.

Summary: Vicarious calibration using in-situ measurements is crucial for on-orbit remote sensors, providing traceability and quantifiable accuracy. RadCalNet standardizes data collection protocols, processes TOA reflectance, and provides uncertainty budgets for currently operating sites.

A Multiscale Nested Sampling Method for Representative Albedo Observations at Various Pixel Scales

Xiaodan Wu et al.

Summary: The article proposes a multiscale nested sampling method for providing representative ground observations at various pixel scales under a unified accuracy requirement. This method utilizes long time sequences of high-resolution images to extract spatiotemporal variation information of surface variables, optimizes sample locations with a random combination method, and conducts optimal sampling from coarse pixel scale to high pixel scale with a top-down nested approach, achieving unified representativeness and predetermined accuracy of surface variables at different pixel scales.
