Gaps and future directions in research on health effects of air pollution

Ruzmyn Vilcassim et al.

Summary: Despite progress in air pollution monitoring and regulation, more efforts are needed to reduce the global health threat of fine particulate matter air pollution. This can be achieved through the development of new technologies to measure personal exposures, consideration of stricter air quality standards, and further research on the effects of particle composition and source. In addition, there is a need to focus on underserved populations disproportionately impacted by air pollution.

Long-term spatiotemporal trends in aerosol optical depth and its relationship with enhanced vegetation index and meteorological parameters over South Asia

Salman Tariq et al.

Summary: Satellite-based aerosol optical depth (AOD) is a crucial variable for assessing aerosol distribution at regional and global levels. In South Asia, AOD shows variations influenced by factors such as population density, economic activities, and meteorological conditions. AOD exhibits different characteristics in different regions and seasons, showing correlations with vegetation index and meteorological variables.

Exceedances and trends of particulate matter (PM2.5) in five Indian megacities

Vikas Singh et al.

Summary: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is the leading environmental risk factor that requires regular monitoring and analysis for effective air quality management. Among the five Indian megacities, Delhi is found to be the most polluted city with a decreasing trend in PM2.5 concentration. Variations in PM2.5 levels are observed due to different site locations and local meteorology, with distinct diurnal, seasonal, and monthly patterns.

Impacts of Indian summer monsoon and stratospheric intrusion on air pollutants in the inland Tibetan Plateau

Xiufeng Yin et al.

Summary: Air pollutants can be transported to the pristine regions such as the Tibetan Plateau, by monsoon and stratospheric intrusion. The effects of the Indian summer monsoon and stratospheric intrusion on air pollutants in the inland Tibetan Plateau are complex and require further studies. Variances of surface ozone concentrations at Nam Co are primarily attributed to stratospheric intrusion of ozone and peaked in May.

Assessing the Relationship between COVID-19, Air Quality, and Meteorological Variables: A Case Study of Dhaka City in Bangladesh

Md Sariful Islam et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of air pollutants and meteorological variables on daily COVID-19 cases in Dhaka city, Bangladesh, finding significant correlations with relative humidity and pressure. Additionally, a nonlinear association was observed between COVID-19 cases and meteorology and air quality variables at different lag days. The results suggest the importance of implementing effective public health intervention measures to slow down the spread of COVID-19.
