PredRANN: The spatiotemporal attention Convolution Recurrent Neural Network for precipitation nowcasting

Chuyao Luo et al.

Summary: Precipitation nowcasting is crucial in transportation, traffic, agriculture, and tourism. Existing methods suffer from information loss, inability to model long-term dependencies, and predict increasing intensity of heavy rainfalls. This paper proposes a predictive model based on temporal and spatial attention, which is shown to be effective and superior through extensive experiments.

Impact of dust deposition on phytoplankton biomass in the Northwestern Pacific: A long-term study from 1998 to 2020

Xianglei Meng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the distribution and variation of dust deposition, high dust deposition events (HDDE), and Chlorophyll-a concentration in the Northwestern Pacific during spring from 1998 to 2020. It explored the differences in phytoplankton biomass response to HDDE in different trophic regions and found that the response probabilities were highest in the subarctic Northwestern Pacific (SNWP) and lowest in the Yellow Sea (YS) and East China Sea (ECS). The study provides a more comprehensive understanding of the differences of phytoplankton response to dust deposition in varying trophic regions.

Data reconstruction of daily MODIS chlorophyll-a concentration and spatio-temporal variations in the Northwestern Pacific

Mingming Xing et al.

Summary: Sea surface chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) is a key indicator of phytoplankton biomass. However, daily Chl-a data often have missing pixels due to orbital position and cloud coverage. This study proposes a machine learning-based method to reconstruct missing pixels and validates it in the Northwestern Pacific. The results show that the method performs well in reconstructing Chl-a data.

Reconstruction of chlorophyll-a satellite data in Bohai and Yellow sea based on DINCAE method

Xiaomin Luo et al.

Summary: The study used the DINCAE method to reconstruct the Chl-a data in the Bohai and Yellow seas and compared it with DINEOF. The results showed that DINCAE outperformed DINEOF in terms of reconstruction accuracy, ability to control small-scale features, and Chl-a values. Additionally, DINCAE was five times faster than DINEOF in terms of efficiency.

Long-term and regional variability of phytoplankton biomass and its physical oceanographic parameters in the Yellow Sea, China

Xiaoling Lu et al.

Summary: The spatiotemporal variation of phytoplankton biomass in five typical regions of the Yellow Sea from 2003 to 2018 was analyzed, showing a decrease in biomass from the inshore to the center of the Yellow Sea. Seasonal changes in biomass were influenced by sea surface temperature, photosynthetically active radiation, and mixed layer depth. Interannual periodicity of chlorophyll-a was mainly influenced by mixed layer depth, with negative correlations with sea surface temperature and PAR, and positive correlation with MLD. Oceanographic parameters like SST, PAR, and MLD played different roles in influencing phytoplankton biomass across regions. In each region, El Niño had a certain influence on the long-term variation of chlorophyll-a in the Yellow Sea.

Interannual-decadal variation in satellite-derived surface chlorophyll-a concentration in the Bohai Sea over the past 16 years

Fangguo Zhai et al.

Summary: The study investigates the interannual-decadal variation in Chlorophyll-a concentration in the Bohai Sea, finding a clear increasing trend from 2003 to 2011 and a decreasing trend from 2012 to 2018. These trends are mainly influenced by sea surface temperature and rainfall variations, which are related to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. Human activities also play a role in affecting Chl-a concentration through anthropogenic nitrogen emissions.
