Vegetation Change and Eco-Environmental Quality Evaluation in the Loess Plateau of China from 2000 to 2020

Shifeng Chen et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the vegetation change and ecological quality of the Loess Plateau using remote sensing data, and evaluated their relationship with climate, terrestrial water storage, and land use/cover change. The results showed that vegetation in the Loess Plateau has significantly recovered, but with regional variations. Precipitation and anthropogenic land use/cover change were found to be the primary factors affecting vegetation change in the region.

Spatiotemporal patterns of planted forests on the Loess Plateau between 1986 and 2021 based on Landsat NDVI time-series analysis

Yuanyuan Meng et al.

Summary: In this study, a dynamic and conversion extraction (DCE) framework was developed to analyze the spatiotemporal dynamics of planted forests. The framework uses Landsat normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time-series and a change detection algorithm to extract the planting year and conversion patterns of planted forests. The framework was applied to the Loess Plateau in China, and the results showed the changes and conversions of planted forests from 1986 to 2021. The accuracy of the framework in mapping planted forests and identifying conversions was evaluated.

Predicting resilience and stability of early second-growth forests

Lucas Andrigo Maure et al.

Summary: This study investigated the factors influencing the resilience and stability of early second-growth forests in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The results showed that resilience was mainly affected by isothermality and precipitation, while stability was mainly influenced by bedrock occurrence and precipitation seasonality. The prediction maps revealed a spatial pattern of increasing resilience and stability from north to south. The findings can guide forest restoration efforts and help achieve restoration commitments in the Atlantic Forest.

Evaluation of ecosystem stability against climate changes via satellite data in the eastern sandy area of northern China

Wenping Kang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the stability of the main sandy land regions in Northern China by combining time-series Net Primary Productivity (NPP) data and the AutoRegression (ARx) model. The results show strong correlations among stability metrics, such as a significant negative correlation between resilience and resistance. The unstable low or moderate-cover grassland and slightly desertified area require more attention to meet the challenges of more intense climate extremes in the future.

Mapping Forest Stability within Major Biomes Using Canopy Indices Derived from MODIS Time Series

Summary: Deforestation and forest degradation are concerning issues in human land use. The conservation of old-growth and other forests with important environmental values is crucial for protecting biodiversity, mitigating climate change impacts, and supporting sustainable livelihoods. This study developed a novel approach for mapping forest ecosystem stability based on satellite data, providing accurate and applicable results for identifying and conserving stable forests.

An exploration of sustainability versus productivity and ecological stability in planted and natural forests in Sichuan, China

Ting Li et al.

Summary: The implementation of forest protection and afforestation programs in China has led to forest restoration and increased productivity. This study examines the temporal and spatial variation in productivity and ecological stability of planted and natural forests in Sichuan Province. The findings show that natural forests have higher temporal stability but lower productivity compared to planted forests. Altitude, latitude, annual precipitation, and stand age are important factors influencing forest productivity and stability.

Mapping temperate forest tree species using dense Sentinel-2 time series

Jan Hemmerling et al.

Summary: Utilizing Sentinel-2 time-series based approach shows potential for mapping tree species in temperate forests, but also faces challenges in accurately classifying a diverse range of species. Addition of environmental variables and texture metrics only marginally improves classification accuracy for minor tree species. Mapping minor tree species is particularly challenging due to statistical reasons such as class imbalance and small sample size.

Ecosystem service multifunctionality of Chinese fir plantations differing in stand age and implications for sustainable management

Yelin Zeng et al.

Summary: Establishing forest plantations is an important solution to the growing conflict between human population growth and the need to protect natural forests, as they offer multiple ecosystem services. However, sustainable management of plantations is challenging due to trade-offs between different services and conflicts between stakeholders. This study quantified 15 ES indicators in Chinese fir plantations and explored ES-multifunctionality under different management scenarios. Results showed pronounced effects of stand age on individual ESs and ES-multifunctionality, with greater impacts on provisioning services and trade-offs between different types of services. Increasing plantation age led to higher multifunctionality values, but the patterns differed among scenarios. Management recommendations are proposed to minimize conflicts between stakeholders.

Spatio-Temporal Changes of Vegetation Net Primary Productivity and Its Driving Factors on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau from 2001 to 2017

Yin Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that from 2001 to 2017, there were significant spatio-temporal variations in the distribution of NPP on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, but most regions showed relatively stable NPP levels. Temperature had a greater impact on NPP than precipitation, while human activities also played a role in influencing NPP levels.
