Impact of changes in river network structure on hydrological connectivity of watersheds

Zhang Xingyuan et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the connectivity of river networks in the Haihe River basin in China. By constructing a graphic model, the researchers analyze the changes in river network structure and their impact on connectivity. The results show that the river network evolves into a small-world network, which improves its efficiency and functionality but leads to decreased connectivity. The structural changes also result in spatial and temporal differences in hydrological connectivity, which further limits the function of the river system.

Assessing sediment connectivity and its spatial response on land use using two flow direction algorithms in the catchment on the Chinese Loess Plateau

Xi-qin Yan et al.

Summary: Severe soil and water loss on the Loess Plateau in China has caused widespread land degradation. This study explores the relationship between land use and sediment connectivity, finding that grassland and forest close to the channel have high sediment connectivity. Furthermore, roads and bare land near the channel also exhibit high or medium sediment connectivity. Landscape metrics such as landscape division index, fractal dimension index, and aggregation index are identified as important factors affecting sediment connectivity at the class scale, while landscape shape index, Shannon's diversity index, and gully density have essential effects at the landscape scale.

New insights on the surface hydrological connectivity of water depth thresholds in a flood-pulse-influenced floodplain system (Poyang Lake, China)

Yunliang Li et al.

Summary: This study used geostatistical connectivity method and hydrodynamic modeling experiments to analyze the surface hydrological connectivity of water depth thresholds in Poyang Lake, China. The results showed that hydrological connectivity is more sensitive to changes in water depth during dry, rising, and receding water phases, and large water bodies are mainly distributed in the main lake and floodplain river channels. The study highlights the importance of considering depth thresholds in assessing hydrological connectivity and ecological responses in floodplains.

Sediment connectivity concepts and approaches

Saeed Najafi et al.

Summary: In recent years, the concept of sediment connectivity has emerged in sediment management, describing the transfer of sediment between different landscape sections. There is structural and functional sediment connectivity, with disagreement and confusion remaining about conceptual and methodological approaches. More process-based studies are needed to achieve a comprehensive understanding of sediment yield and related processes.

Land use and land cover change-induced changes of sediment connectivity and their effects on sediment yield in a catchment on the Loess Plateau in China

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the impact of landscape pattern on sediment transfer in a typical catchment on the Loess Plateau in China using a sediment connectivity model, showing that vegetation restoration and terrace construction on slopes are the main drivers for reducing sediment yield.

Spatiotemporal Evolution of Wetland Eco-Hydrological Connectivity in the Poyang Lake Area Based on Long Time-Series Remote Sensing Images

Yang Xia et al.

Summary: This study used Landsat remote sensing images and land use data to assess wetland hydrological connectivity in the Poyang Lake area using a morphological spatial pattern analysis model. The results showed dramatic changes in wetland landscape area, with the core wetland playing a dominant role in hydrological connectivity. The hydrological connectivity of wetlands in the area has been increasing since 2005, driven by precipitation and large-scale water conservation projects.

Relationship of sediment yield to connectivity index in small watersheds with similar erosion potentials

Mahmood Arabkhedri et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the relationship between the connectivity index and specific sediment yield of catchments with similar erosion potentials. The results show that a 30-m resolution IC can be implemented to assess sediment delivery quantitatively at small catchment scales, serving as a substitute for traditional models.

Yinghu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study explores the concept, approaches, and future research of hydrological connectivity at multiscales, analyzing the effects of human activities and natural factors. It concludes that a standard concept of hydrological connectivity may vary in different environments and emphasizes the importance of considering it in social-economical-ecological-hydrological frameworks for effective water management.

The 30 m annual land cover dataset and its dynamics in China from 1990 to 2019

Jie Yang et al.

Summary: Land cover (LC) plays a crucial role in energy exchange and environmental impact. Rapid changes in land cover in China necessitate fine-scale monitoring. A new dataset, CLCD, based on Landsat data on the Google Earth Engine platform provides valuable insights into China's land cover dynamics from 1990 to 2019.
