Pore Aperture Control Toward Size-Exclusion-Based Hydrocarbon Separations

Bhajan Lal et al.

Summary: We report the synthesis of a zinc-based MOF containing a three-dimensional (3D) linker, which shows high thermal stability for the separation of hexane isomers. The incorporation of the 3D linker enhances the structural stability and provides precise pore apertures/channels. This work represents a significant milestone in the construction of stable Zn-based MOFs and the incorporation of 3D linkers for challenging separations.

P. A. Demakov et al.

Summary: This is the first example of a coordination polymer containing a triply charged metal ion, which is formed by the flexible bridging ligand 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane N,N'-dioxide (odabco). The crystal structure of this compound is determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing a six-coordinated octahedral La3+ sites. The compound exhibits a 3D cationic coordination lattice with a primitive cubic (pcu) topology, containing isolated voids filled with chloride anions and water molecules. The compound is characterized by powder XRD and elemental analysis, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy shows the absence of absorption maxima in the visible and UV ranges up to 270 nm.

Transformation of Al-CDC from 3D crystals to 2D nanosheets in macroporous polyacrylates with enhanced CH4/N2 separation efficiency and stability

Wanru Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, a composite material was prepared by in-situ growing a specific aluminum-based metal-organic framework (MOF) with trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylicacid as ligand (Al-CDC) on the internal macroporous surface of polyacrylates (PA). The morphology of Al-CDC was transformed to ultrathin films with higher adsorption efficiency and lower diffusion barrier, leading to increased adsorption efficiency and selectivity for CH4/N-2 separation. The hydrophobic feature of PA enhanced the water and recycling stability of the composite, making it a promising adsorbent for coal-bed methane purification.

Ultrahigh selectivity of benzene/cyclohexane separation by ZIF-8 framework: Insights from spin-probe EPR spectroscopy

Artem S. Poryvaev et al.

Summary: The liquid-phase separation of cyclohexane and benzene is both in demand and challenging. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising selective sorbents for extracting components from the mixture. The study provides mechanistic insights into the diffusion of benzene and cyclohexane in MOF ZIF-8 and confirms that only benzene can penetrate the particles. However, there is a decrease in separation efficiency and only partial removal of benzene in mixtures with small fractions of benzene due to reverse diffusion.

Separation of Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Porous Materials

Karam B. Idrees et al.

Summary: Industrial-scale thermal separation processes contribute to the increase in carbon dioxide emissions. Porous materials, like metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), can potentially reduce these emissions by achieving nonthermal chemical separations through the physical adsorption of target species. This study focuses on the synthesis of channel-based MOFs NU-2000 and NU-2001, which can separate industrially relevant xylene isomers under ambient conditions due to sub-angstrom size differences. By increasing the linker dimensionality from 2D to 3D, precise control of MOF pore size and aperture can be achieved, independent of linker orientation.
